City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Author Reading | Robert Hagstrom discusses his book Investing: The Last Liberal Art

Hagstrom explores basic and fundamental investing concepts in a range of fields outside of economics, including physics, biology, sociology, psychology, philosophy and literature. He discusses, for instance, how the theory of evolution disrupts the notion of the efficient market and how reading strategies for literature can be gainfully applied to investing research. Building on Charlie Munger's famous "latticework of mental models" concept, Hagstrom argues that it is impossible to make good investment decisions based solely on a strong knowledge of finance theory alone. Talk will be followed by book signing. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Lecture | Food, Places, and Names: Local Food, Global Trade, and the Future of Rural Communities

With Fabio Parasecoli, Associate Professor and the Coordinator of the Food Studies Program at the New School. Geographical indications, a form of intellectual property designated by considering principally the place of origin of food products, have become a hot topic among producers, activists, economists, and politicians worldwide. Commercial and legal issues related to them have generated complex negotiations in international organizations and national institutions, while their cultural aspects have stimulated debates about the impact of global trade on local identities. Is this model, widely applied in Europe and other parts of the world, viable in the USA? Could geographical indications become a valid tool to implement community-based, sustainable, and quality-oriented agriculture?
