City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

The School of Design Strategies offers a range of experimental programs on the forefront of design, business, and innovation. The works featured in this exhibition present strategy in action. How can we use design thinking to promote change, to foster creativity, to envision the new urban? How can design be employed to improve or reimagine established systems, from fashion to health care to housing? The featured projects confront questions like these through rigorous research and application. City Walk | The High Line Sunset Tour

The area around the High Line Park was a vital business district of New York City, supplying fresh fruits, French Cheeses and Russian caviar as well as fresh meats to City markets. The hustle and bustle of the streets induced the City to elevate the railroad trains delivering goods to the commercial buildings. When interstate truck traffic made the railway outdated, it fell into ruin, only to be regenerated as a park. Reservations Required RESERVE NOW

Opening Reception | Babs Reingold's The Last Tree, an Installation with 193 Tree-Stump Sculptures

A monumental installation of 193 tree stump sculptures encased in metal pails and placed in a grid formation to transform the gallery space into a barren landscape. The number of stumps corresponds to that of the countries in the world, namely, those members of the United Nations. One large tree rises from the grid, as a symbol of the "last tree," which is in danger of its extinction from the earth. The devastated stumps are poised to witness the destruction of the "last tree" – a fate that humanity is bringing onto itself. Accompanying video projections and sounds amplify the urgency of the situation.

Screening | Puerto Rican Film: Ari Maniel Cruz's Under My Nails (2012)

A psychological thriller written by Kisha Tikina Burgos, a longtime Puerto Rican immigrant living an isolated life as a manicurist under the overhead trains of the snow-covered Bronx. Her character is born of trauma-the film begins with an eerily cinematic suggestion of the violent deaths of both her mother and father. At her father's wake, another child releases a green lizard into Solimar's hair. This lizard haunts the narrative, lending an air of magical realism to this story. 90 min. Post-screening Q&A with writer Kisha Tikina Burgos, director Ari Maniel Cruz and moderated by Dr. Steeve Coupeau, President NYIHA MEDIA.
