Lecture | Power and Betrayal: Sir William Johnson's Mohawk Dynasty and the Legacy of the American Revolution

With the exception of Benjamin Franklin, Sir William Johnson (1715-1774) likely enjoyed wider renown than any man living in British North America. An Irishman who settled in New York's Mohawk Valley during the late 1730s, at the age of twenty-three, the ruthless and charismatic Johnson went on to become one of the continent's largest landowners, a hero of the Seven Years' War, and, most famously, Britain's premier diplomat to the Indians. But he was perhaps best known, both there and abroad, for having gone a bit native and for his flagrant sexual liaisons with Indian women, with whom he was rumored to have "as many children... as the late emperor of Morocco." Speaker Kirk Davis Swinehart, a historian and book critic, is completing a book about Sir William Johnson and his Mohawk family, to be published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale and has written for the Washintgton Post, the New Republic, and the Wall Street Journal.

Opening Reception | Egan Frantz: Multiples

For this exhibition, Egan Frantz has focused his attention on artist multiples. He is interested in multiples, in part, because they are united by their lack of uniqueness, a characteristic usually regarded as a prerequisite in a work of art. However we know, at least since Duchamp's ready-made, that a work of art as multiple does not preclude a unique historical event from taking place.

An objective yet empathetic observer, Wolberg intuitively photographs moments of wonder, spectacle, and solitude. Lecture | The Ideal and the Reality of the Philosopher-Writer in Plato

In the ancient biographies, Plato is reported to have studied and written poetry before meeting Socrates, which caused him to burn his literary compositions. This anecdote, be it true or not, points to Plato’s critical attitude to poetry, which finds its utmost expression in the expulsion of poets from his ideal state in the Republic. However, it is baffling that Plato, who launches a thorough critique of poetry, is one of the most ‘literary’ philosophers. With Euree Song.

Lecture | The Power of Playful Learning: How Our Children Really Learn

Child Development Lecture with Kathy Hirsh-Pasek Gone are the days when children spent nearly half of their free time at play. Across the country, thousands of schools trim recess from the day’s activities, telling us the time is better spent in academic pursuits. But have our children profited from this uptick in “educational” time? Statistics suggest not: U.S. teens rank surprisingly low among industrialized nations in reading, science, and math. Newsweek decries the next generation’s lack of creativity in a century that demands flexible thinking, while some have gone farther and insisted that our subpar performance is a national security risk. How, then, do our children really learn?

Concert | The Brooklyn Manila Project Featuring DEORO

Dave Eggar and Chuck Palmer and special guests Nyko Maca, Waway Saway, Daniel Darwin, and Jonan Aguilar. Video by the DLP. Choreography by Attack Theatre. Four years ago the Grammy-nominated production team DEORO embarked on a radical musical adventure on the remote island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. In the hills of Bukidnon they wrote and recorded with members of the Talaandig tribe and Katyapi virtuoso Waway Saway. Fusing their unique style of classical groove with the thousand year old local tradition of tribal music, Dave Eggar and Chuck Palmer continued their collaborations in the bustling metropolis of Manila fusing the tribal music with the edgy urban sounds of some of the best known young Filipino Artists Nyko Maca and Jonan Aguilar. This resulted in the release of DEOROXX a powerful record celebrating the fusion of western and Filipino music. DEORO now brings this innovative fusion of the classical the tribal and urban contemporary to Lincoln Center for a powerful evening of music, dance, martial arts and video celebrating Filipino culture past and present and a new era of extreme collaboration.
