Opening Reception | Paintings: Agathe de Bailliencourt's Sheer

This marks the first solo exhibition for the artist at the gallery and features all new paintings. On the basis of an inquiry into the materiality of raw linen canvas, Agathe de Bailliencourt’s exhibition deals with the classic question of horizon, as one of painting’s most traditional acts in defining time, space, and a scale of infinity. Following an installation at Art Omi in Ghent, NY in summer 2012, the series conveys the experience of painting in real space and in nature to the act of painting within the defined dimensions of canvas and the studio.

One of the most brutal legacies of modern warfare is the land mine. Talk | The Lenox Library: A Treasure House for Gilded-Age New York

With Sally Webster, Professor Emerita of American Art at Lehman College and the Graduate Center. The New York Public Library, which opened in 1911, had two predecessors--the Lenox, on upper Fifth Avenue where the Frick Collection now stands, and the Astor, housed in the landmark building occupied by the Public Theater. The two libraries differed from one another and from what was to follow. The Astor was essentially a non-lending library and reading room for the citizens of New York, while the Lenox was a treasure house of rare books and works of art. Through the use of archival photographs, sketches and prints, this lecture will illuminate Richard Morris Hunt’s design and the interior display of books and art established by Lenox and his librarians.

An intellectual comedy set just before the turn of the century in Egypt. A British astronomer, Thayer, has come to believe that beings more highly evolved than us are alive on Mars. But as work progresses, the Egyptian workers, less "evolved" than the British, are also less than cooperative, and a bout of malaria that seems to activate at the worst moments makes it all much more confusing and complex than Thayer ever imagined.
