Tour | Amsterdam: Trading on Tolerance (virtual)

Amsterdam was a powerful and pragmatic trading town. International trade meant the meeting of different values and cultures. So the town often tolerated things they didn't agree with. Don't be fooled into thinking this was ultraism, it wasn't a 'celebration of diversity' by any means; it was definitely a 'putting up with differences'. When people went too far, they paid the ultimate price. The Dutch have famously tolerated prostitution (Red Light District), Catholics (Hidden Churches) and cannabis (Coffeeshops) when all those things were illegal. They rather harshly did NOT tolerate people endangering trade. Take a walk around the very old historic centre: the Old Church/Red Light District (N.B. it is illegal to show women in windows) / Zeedijk / Nieuwmarkt. The stories are interesting and the scenery is superb.

Play | Altar: Re-memberings of a Colonized Child, Multi-Media Play Excerpt (virtual)

Altar: The Raising of a Colonized Child is a multi-media play that pays homage to the relearning of spiritual practice by women who were born in the US and have ancestral backgrounds that make them indigenous to another land territory. The play uplifts stories of people who have upheld spiritual practices crucial to survival in the face of oppression and the cultural erasure of migrant peoples and tells these truths through the raising of a child by her grandmother. This excerpt speaks to the relation of the young womxn to her grandmother through the body and the notion that our ancestors live in every part of our physical selves. The body in this case is an Altar that carries remnants, fragments of ancestral being and that are honored here, by honoring the memories of exchange between the young womxn and her grandmother. Theater | JM Synge's The Aran Islands: 'a hypnotic performance' by One of Ireland's Finest Actors (virtual)

In the grey, sea-battered landscape of the Aran Islands, full of mist and wild rain, hearth is home and storytellers regale with tales by the fire. When John Millington Synge traveled to these remote islands upon the advice of WB Yeats in 1898, he discovered a bleakly primitive, mystical land that would inspire him for the rest of his life, leading to canonical works in Irish theatre, including The Playboy of the Western World and Riders to the Sea. The Aran Islands is a haunting and visceral experience built around "a hypnotic performance" by Brendan Conroy, one of Ireland's finest actors, as he captures the spirit of Synge in Joe O'Bryne's theatrical adaptation of Synge's early work, "The Aran Islands." This play has been reimagined for digital presentation, transporting audiences to a distant world.
