Slide Lecture | Precarious Freedom: African-Americans in Antebellum New York (virtual)

What did freedom mean to Black New Yorkers in an era of mounting sectional conflict? This talk will take you on a tour of neighborhoods and dockyards, schools and churches, newspaper columns and civil rights conventions, and of almshouses and juvenile reformatories in a quest to illuminate the full panoply of African American history from emancipation through the NYC draft riots. You will meet working poor African Americans who, against the backdrop of rising racism, used public reform and relief institutions to supplement their survival strategies and thwart slave catchers. You will learn about a school teacher who challenged segregated horsecars in lower Manhattan, and a network of working poor New Yorkers who drew upon the law to operate an “Underground Railroad” in the city. You will reflect on the sources and implications of the orgy of racial violence that engulfed New York months after President Abraham Lincoln issued an Emancipation Proclamation that held the promise of transforming a war for Union into a struggle against slavery. Presented by professor Gunja SenGupta of Brooklyn College.

Opera | Met Opera: Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice (virtual, streaming for 23 hours)

Director and choreographer Mark Morris's production of Gluck's masterpiece updates the immortal story from its ancient Greek roots to the timeless present, where, he says, "the union of chorus and dancers feels inevitable and inseparable." With costumes by Isaac Mizrahi and a set designed by Allen Moyer, this production surrounds the action with the superb Met chorus dressed as a crowd of historic characters who bear witness to the transformative power of love. Orfeo (Stephanie Blythe) is so consumed with grief at the death of his beloved Euridice (Danielle de Niese) that the gods (Heidi Grant Murphy as Amor) allow him to lead her back from the underworld--if he will not look at her on the way. Of course he can't resist looking, but the gods are truly merciful.

Book Discussion | A Bright Ray of Darkness: Oscar Nominee Ethan Hawke Talks About his Book (virtual)

The acclaimed actor/writer/director's first novel in 20 years is the blistering story of a young man making his Broadway debut in Henry IV just as his marriage implodes. Four-time Academy Award nominee, twice for writing and twice for acting, Ethan Hawke's new novel is a bracing meditation on fame and celebrity and the redemptive, healing power of art; a portrait of divorce; and a poignant consideration on fatherhood. It's also a passionate love letter to the world of theater. His narrator is a young man in torment, disgusted with himself after the collapse of his marriage, still half-hoping for a reconciliation that would allow him to forgive himself and move on. But he might find his redemption in the challenge of performing Hotspur in a production of Henry IV under the leadership of a brilliant director, helmed by one of the most electrifying--and narcissistic--Falstaffs of all time.
