Symposium | The Wild I: An Exploration of Water and Poetry

In this symposium, poets will explore the symbol of water, and its many ramifications in their lives. Water, both ephemeral and timeless, carries with it its own history. It connects us to our ancestors and to our future. Most importantly, it is a form that is intrinsically connected to poetry, with poetry’s watery and associative, fluid, electrified, and occult properties. During this daylong event, we will consider: What is a poetry of water? What does a world look like without water? How can poets save the planet? With: Jordan Abel, Abigail Chabitnoy, CAConrad, Timothy Donnelly, Matthea Harvey, Douglas Kearney, Luna Miguel, Shane McCrae, Celina Su, Cecilia Pavon, Phillip B. Williams, and Lynn Xu.

Classical Music | Paul Bowles: A Musical Portrait of the The Sheltering Sky Author

A recital of Bowles' songs and solo piano works, interspersed with recitations of selections from Bowles' letters and memoir, plus other texts by his literary friends including Gertrude Stein and Virgil Thomson. Wikipedia: Paul Bowles was an American migrant composer, author, and translator. He became associated with Tangier, where he settled in 1947 and lived for 52 years to the end of his life. Following a cultured middle-class upbringing in New York City, during which he displayed a talent for music and writing, Bowles pursued his education at the University of Virginia before making several trips to Paris in the 1930s. He studied music with Aaron Copland, and in New York wrote music for theatrical productions, as well as other compositions. He achieved critical and popular success with his first novel The Sheltering Sky (1949), set in what was known as French North Africa, which he had visited in 1931. In 1947 Bowles settled in Tangier, at that time in the Tangier International Zone, and his wife Jane Bowles followed in 1948. Except for winters spent in Ceylon during the early 1950s, Tangier was Bowles' home for the remainder of his life. He came to symbolize American immigrants in the city.

Performance | Already Dead. Feedback Loops of Despair: Performance Art

Polish performer and intermedia artist Kuba Falk describes the ideas behind his performance: "This performance is a mourning for loss. An action to embody something as abstract as issue of climate change. It is a lamentation. To acknowledge feelings of grief and despair. They need to be experienced in order to move on, to transform, heal, change - within spiritual frame." Falk studied in Krakow at the Intermedia Department of the Academy of Fine Arts; Stage Directing and Stage Acting at the Academy of Theatre Arts and Comparative Religion Studies at the Jagiellonian University. He creates body-based works built out of personal rituals and spiritual practice with strong presence of themes of healing through facing shadows and inconvenient truths of self delusion. His poetry, video and sound works are often incorporated into his performances creating complex actions.
