Lecture | Student Life During Wartime: World War II at the College

Before the outbreak of World War II, the school's Committee on Instruction met monthly to discuss practical academic concerns, and to debate the essential components of an undergraduate liberal arts education. But in the early 1940s the Committee’s conversations underwent a marked shift, as the Second World War increasingly intruded on the requirements and routines of college life. This talk by Karen Seeley, Lecturer in Anthropology at Columbia University, will examine the College’s response to this “total war.” Based on her research in the College archives and elsewhere, Dr. Seeley will discuss the school’s attempts to mobilize students to contribute to the war effort, as well as the war’s implications for a sheltered women’s college.

Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche. The viewer is placed in the peculiar but exhilarating position of deciding for him- or herself whether the artwork expresses a disjuncture with reality or an uninhibited embracing of interior life. After all, what is more true, the picture that looks real or the picture that feels real; the observer or the observed?

Opening Reception | Color Photographs from the WPA (1939-1943)

Largely forgotten until the mid-seventies when they resurfaced in the Library of Congress archives, the color photographs of the Works Project Administration (1939-1943) document the later period of FDR's New Deal, an ambitious series of government programs designed to address the brutal effects of the Great Depression on the social and economic fabric of 1930's America. While the Library's archive of black and white depression-era photographs is more familiar and more often reproduced, the color images, taken within three years of the invention of Kodachrome film, are striking for their rich, saturated colors and rigorously formal compositions.

Opening Reception | World in a Box, an Exhibition of “Box Art”

From Joseph Cornell’s poetic reveries on the universe to the illusionistic tableaus of William Beckman’s painted world; from the folk art inspired figures of Barry Cohen’s constructions to the vivid and detailed underground tableaux of Alan Wolfson, Arman’s boxes of assembled materials measure the world through things that are tossed aside or easily forgotten. The same kind of found aesthetic is at the heart of Dan Basen’s boxes, whether his mini panorama of a city composed of sticks of colored chalk or his arrangement of paint tubes. Other artists in this exhibition, including James Grashow, Richard Haden, Wayne Nowack and the team of Serge Clément and Marina Kamena. Shown: Joseph Cornell, "Untitled (Weather Prophet)," 1954, Mixed media box construction, 18 1/4 x 11 x 5 1/4 in. 46.4 x 27.9 x 13.3 cm Signed lower center of verso i

Dance Lesson | Introduction to Congolese Dance

Congolese culture is deep and ancient. It has had a profound influence on many musical and dance styles. Many modern dance forms have some Congolese roots (samba, salsa, reggae, cha-cha-cha, belly dance, even the “moonwalk” popularized by Michael Jackson). In this class, Funmilayo Chesney will teach us dances from the Congo region, including dances designed for healing, flirtation, celebrations, etc., as well as some Congolese songs. This class provides a great workout, as we master footwork techniques, intense body isolation moves, and a signature powerful circular motion that radically increases the body’s fluidity and can greatly enhance our ability to dance in any style.

Slide Lecture | Moustafa Bayoumi talks about his book How Does It Feel To Be a Problem?: Being Young and Arab in America

In this illustrated presentation, the author explores the story of how young Arab and Muslim Americans are forging lives for themselves in a country that often mistakes them for the enemy. He immerses the audience in a reality at once inconceivable and achingly familiar to unveil an unforgettable American story of race, religion, and civil rights, full of struggle, promise and hope. He reveals in the first-hand accounts of seven young Arab-Americans living in Brooklyn, the passions, frustrations, struggles, aspirations, and ultimately, the undeterred hope, harbored by the inspiring young people.

Discussion | On Freedom With Violence

How do we understand the relationship between freedom, violence and the state in neoliberal times? Who is seen to be in need of protection from what forms of violence? And, how does institutionalized violence become legitimated? In his new book, Freedom with Violence: Race, Sexuality and the U.S. State, Chandan Reddy (English, University of Washington) proposes a new paradigm to understand the relationship between race, sexuality, and citizenship. His work emerges from the critical contradiction at the core of modernity: the nation-state both claims to provide freedom from violence as well as depends on its systematic use of violence against people determined to be non-normative and irrational. Join him for a conversation with local organizers working on issues of institutionalized violence in queer communities of color.

Author Reading | Jeanette Winterson reads from her book Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?

Jeanette Winterson's bold and revelatory novels have earned her widespread acclaim, establishing her as a major figure in literature today. She has written some of the most admired books of the past few decades, including her internationally best-selling first novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, the story of a young girl adopted by Pentecostal parents. Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? is a memoir about a life's work to find happiness. It is a book full of stories: about a girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night; about a religious zealot disguised as a mother who has two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the dresser, waiting for Armageddon; about growing up in a north England industrial town now changed beyond recognition; about the universe as a cosmic dustbin. It is the story of how a painful past, which Winterson thought she had written over and repainted, rose to haunt her later in life, sending her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her biological mother. It is also a book about other people's literature, one that shows how fiction and poetry can form a string of guiding lights, a life raft that supports us when we are sinking.

For the first time ever, the Austrian cult favorite duo known as Attwenger will be performing at select locations throughout the United States. The music of Attwenger, who are sometimes referred to as the anti-folk music duo, is an unusual combination of Austrian Folk music and electronic music with lyrics sung (and rapped) in a rural Austrian dialect. The name Attwenger comes from an old four-lined stanza, that was played in regional broadcast and later appropriated by Markus Binder and Hans-Peter Falkner.
