Concert | Orpheus Chamber Orchestra: Open Rehearsal

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is a Grammy Award-winning classical music chamber orchestra based in New York City. It is known for its collaborative leadership style in which the musicians, not a conductor, interpret the score. Orpheus was founded in 1972, by cellist Julian Fifer and a group of fellow musicians who aspired to perform orchestral repertoire using chamber music ensemble techniques. Central to its distinctive personality is its unique practice of sharing and rotating leadership roles. For every work, the members of the orchestra select the concertmaster and the principal players for each section. These players constitute the core group, whose role is to form the initial concept of the piece and to shape the rehearsal process. In the final rehearsals, all members of the orchestra participate in refining the interpretation and execution, with members taking turns listening from the hall for balance, blend, articulation, dynamic range and clarity of expression. Program TBA.

Gallery Talk | Curator's Tour of Jubilation|Rumination: Life, Real and Imagined

Life is not lived in black and white: reality may have the tinge of dreams and dreams an air of reality. This provocative tension exists between the experiential nature of early American folk art and the fantastical imagery it often displays—between what is real and what is imagined. The same is true of the work of contemporary self-taught artists, which may introduce unique—and sometimes puzzling—expressions that illuminate the iconoclastic nature that is the flip side of the collective American psyche. The viewer is placed in the peculiar but exhilarating position of deciding for him- or herself whether the artwork expresses a disjuncture with reality or an uninhibited embracing of interior life. After all, what is more true, the picture that looks real or the picture that feels real; the observer or the observed?

The exhibition intimately depicts Scarpa’s thought process through the architectural designs for Villa Ottolenghi, one of his most well known completed works (Bardolino, Verona 1974-79) and Il Palazzetto, a series of architectural interventions that re-imagined the grounds of a 17th century villa (Monselice Padua, 1969-1978).

Talk | Joyce Purnick, ex-Times Metro Editor, discusses her book Mike Bloomberg: Money, Power, Politics

The author, who has covered six New York City mayors, traces the life of Michael Bloomberg from child to businessman to self-made billionaire to the 108th mayor of New York City. She studies his record and his efforts to overturn the city's two-term limit to win a third term as mayor. She addresses the always complex, difficult job of governing New York City, discusses mayoral leadership in New York over the years, how it has, or has not changed, the comparative role of other elected officials in the city, and how Mayor Bloomberg is likely to be judged by history. She will enthusiastically take questions from the audience in an effort to make her appearance informal and interactive.

Author Reading | Hari Kunzru reads from his book Gods Without Men

David Mitchell says Gods Without Men is "a beautifully written echo chamber of a novel." Driven by the energy and cunning of Coyote, the mythic, shape-shifting trickster, Gods Without Men is full of big ideas, but centered on flesh-and-blood characters who converge at an odd, remote town in the shadow of a rock formation called the Pinnacles. Viscerally gripping and intellectually engaging, it is, above all, a heartfelt exploration of the search for pattern and meaning in a chaotic universe. Hari Kunzru will be in conversation with James Surowiecki, staff writer for The New Yorker and writer of The Financial Page in the magazine.

Discussion | PBS' Charlie Rose interviews Claude Lanzmann, author of The Patagonian Hare

In his remarkable memoir, The Patagonian Hare, newly translated into English, Claude Lanzmann offers a visionary testimonial of his own life and of eighty years of contemporary history. Born to a Jewish family in Paris in 1925, Lanzmann hid with his family in wartime France and joined the communist Resistance as a teenager. After the Liberation, he studied philosophy at the Sorbonne and met Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Lanzmann recalls his seven-year love affair with the older de Beauvoir and his role as the editor of Les Temps Modernes. His memoir also recounts his discovery of Israel shortly after the war and the making of his masterpiece, Shoah, including harrowing interviews with former Nazis filmed with artfully hidden cameras. Charlie Rose is an acclaimed interviewer and broadcast journalist who engages the best thinkers and newsmakers in interviews and roundtable discussions. His interview with Claude Lanzmann will air on Charlie Rose on PBS.
