Discussion | A discussion on musician Nina Simone and writer Lorraine Hansberry

Led by Shelly Eversley. Lorraine Hansberry (1930–1965) worked with Paul Robeson and WEB DuBois writing political speeches, letters, and essays before her best-known work, A Raisin in the Sun, became a Broadway hit in 1959. She was active in the women’s movement and supported and inspired many other artists, including Nina Simone, who borrowed Hanberry’s title, “Young, Gifted and Black” for a song that would become a hit single in 1969 (four years after Hansberry’s early death). Nina Simone (1933–2003) was a musician whose thwarted aspirations to become a classical pianist led her to forge one of the most original and influential jazz styles of her day. She was a major influence and inspiration in the American civil rights movement. This salon will focus on these two exceptional African American female artists in the context of the black avant-garde as it took formation from WWII forward.

Lecture | The Possibility of Biology

With Laura Franklin-Hall, Assistant Professor of Philosophy. Organisms are composed of countless kinds of molecules interacting in a wide variety of ways. From this complexity, regular organism behavior often emerges, behavior of the kind described in animal guidebooks. Professor Franklin-Hall will characterize some of the biological design principles which explain how simple organism behavior can emerge from molecular complexity. This characterization will help us to understand how biological theory is related to theories in the 'lower-level' sciences, such as chemistry and physics.

Author Reading | Lauren Redniss reads from her book Radioactive: Marie & Pierre Curie

In 1891, 24 year old Marie, née Marya Sklodowska, moved from Warsaw to Paris, where she found work in the laboratory of Pierre Curie, a scientist engaged in research on heat and magnetism. They fell in love. They took their honeymoon on bicycles. They expanded the periodic table, discovering two new elements with startling properties, radium and polonium. They recognized radioactivity as an atomic property, heralding the dawn of a new scientific era. They won the Nobel Prize. Newspapers mythologized the couple's romance, beginning articles on the Curies with "Once upon a time . . . " Then, in 1906, Pierre was killed in a freak accident. Marie continued their work alone. She won a second Nobel Prize in 1911, and fell in love again, this time with the married physicist Paul Langevin. Scandal ensued. Duels were fought.
