Gallery Talk | “Japan Fashion Now” Talk and Tour

Curator Valerie Steele's tours lead you through "Japan Fashion Now," a dramatic mise-en-scène of approximately 100 ensembles that represent Japanese fashion in all its radical creativity. Japan Fashion Now explores how Japanese fashion has evolved in recent years. Japanese fashion today embraces not only the cerebral, avant-garde looks associated with the first wave of Japanese design in the 1980s, but also a range of subcultural and youth-oriented styles, such as the Elegant Gothic Lolita style and the Cosplay phenomenon. In addition, Japanese fashion often has a strong component of realism and an obsessive interest in perfecting classic styles. Contemporary Japanese fashion is significant globally precisely because it mixes elements of the avant-garde (pushing the aesthetic envelope at the level of -high- art) and elements of realism (such as high-tech fabrics or an obsession with the perfect pair of jeans) with popular or subcultural elements, especially those associated with electronic manifestations, such as animated cartoons and videogames.

Lecture | Developing Abortion Jurisprudence under the African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights

A special seminar with Prof. Charles Ngwena, Faculty of Law, University of the Free State Bloemfontein, South Africa; Director, Programme in Sexual and Reproductive Rights; Member, Ethics Review Committee, World Health Organization. The recent decision of the European Court of Human Rights in A, B and C v Ireland (2010) contains positive as well as negative lessons for the African Court of Human Rights on regional jurisprudence on abortion. The positive lessons lie in the holding by the Court that domestic abortion laws must be transparent in order to enable women seeking abortion to exercise their rights effectively. The negative lessons lie in the reluctance of the Court to affirm abortion rights, and even more so, in the manner in which the Court gave license to a state to compel women to bear children even if it compromises their health and well-being. While in Ireland denying women abortion under domestic law compels "abortion tourism," in the African region, it compels unsafe abortion.

Discussion | A Discussion on Poet Barbara Guest and Artist Joan Mitchell

Led by Erica Kaufman. Barbara Guest (1920–2006) was a poet and a member of an informal but highly influential group of writers known as the New York School of poets. Influenced by modern art, especially surrealism and abstract expressionism, she also wrote prose, which was eventually collected in Forces of the Imagination: Writing on Writing and includes an essay on her friend Joan Mitchell (1925–1992), whose painting she promoted. Along with Lee Krasner, Grace Hartigan, and Helen Frankenthaler, Joan Mitchell was one of the few female painters associated with abstract expressionism to gain critical and public acclaim. This salon will focus on the ways these two professional artists navigated the cold war climate of chauvinism and repression.

Opening Reception | Artist William Pope.L launches his sculpture “a philosophical solution”

"a philosophical solution" is a conceptual readymade, a wine bottle filled with a dark mysterious liquid in a branded wooden crate. Like a riddle, this piece contains hidden messages–a tiny tongue, a closed box, a sealed bottle, an opaque elixir. Together these elements expose our complicated relationship to language and those libations that let our own tongues run. In the artist's words, this edition is: "A beverage of dark mental liquid in the vein of such ideas as: 'the text wrote itself' or 'language has a mind of its own'; a thirst- quencher that silences the sipper while versing the sipped." William Pope.L (born 1955 in Newark, New Jersey) is a prominent multidisciplinary artist known for his conceptual, often performance-based art practice, which actively confronts issues of race, sex, power, consumerism, and social class. As the self-proclaimed “friendliest black artist in America,” Pope.L invites dialogue through provocative performances, installations, and art objects. His work has been exhibited and performed at The Whitney Museum in New York, Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, Institute of Contemporary Art Philadelphia, and the Renaissance Society in Chicago. Shown: "a philosophical solution," 2011, mixed media sculpture, 13.5 x 4 x 4 inches.

Author Reading | Book Launch: Jon Bird's Leon Golub: Echoes of the Real

Leon Golub (1922–2004) was a leading advocate of history painting—paintings that depicted narrative scenes drawn from famous moments in history and symbolized the ongoing struggle for power in both social and political relations. In this updated and expanded edition of Leon Golub: Echoes of the Real, Jon Bird examines Golub’s work from his classically influenced early paintings to his later depictions of conflict and masculine aggression and the compelling images of his final decades.

Discussion | Photographer Lyle Ashton Harris discusses his book Excessive Exposure

Widely known for his self-portraiture and explorations of identity in his photographs, videos, and performances, artist Lyle Ashton Harris has spent the last decade creating a monumental series of sepia-toned portraits with the large-format Polaroid camera. These 200 portraits of family, friends, cultural figures, celebrities, and fellow artists blur conventional roles, identities, and racial categories in subtle plays of light and shadow. Marking the publication of Excessive Exposure, which collects the complete series of "Chocolate Portraits," acclaimed artist Chuck Close, one of today’s most original creators of portraits in both painting and photography, joins Harris in a conversation on topics ranging from portraiture and photography in the context of the contemporary art world to aspects of their own art-making practices.

Talk | Jews in Food: Mainstreaming of Jewish Food in America

With Gil Marks, author of Encyclopedia of Jewish Food. For more than 2,000 years, Jews have brought culinary traditions with them to various countries and also adopted local dishes, modifying them to fit their dietary laws, lifestyle, and tastes. The author will explore these phenomena of transforming and transmitting foods in America, including the mainstreaming of the blatantly Jewish bagel and rugelach, to items with less obvious Jewish roots, including Boston baked beans, and the Jewish role in transforming foods, such as doughnuts and yogurt. He will follow the mainstreaming of kosher foods in America from canned vegetarian baked beans (ultimately derived from Sephardic Sabbath stews) to more than 110,000 products under kosher supervision.
