Jazz | Latin Jazz: Chris Washburne & the SYOSTOS Band

In collaboration with Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concert Series, these musicians push the genre of Latin Jazz into uncharted waters with a postmodern mix that embraces dissonance, weaving contemporary up-tempo beats with a driving sound. The New York Times describes their playing as, "… fire with erudition." SYOTOS was founded 19 years ago and has become what Time Out New York calls a "Latin Jazz institution." It has held the longest-running Latin jazz gig in the city's history, playing every week for 18 years. Several of the members are alumni from the bands of Tito Puente and Eddie Palmieri, who continue to push the genre into the 21st century in footsteps of those trailblazers.

Screening | Merce Cunningham & Elliot Caplan's Short Film Deli Commedia (1985)

Deli Commedia is conceived as a slapstick comedy, Cunningham's nod to the improvised farces of the Italian 18th Century commedia dell'arte. The music, like the action, is a throwback to silent-film days when actors "danced" their story line and exaggeration conveyed emotion, the piano all the while providing dramatic emphasis. Comic kinetic jokes, cakewalking, tango, lindy hop and imaginative juxtaposition of bodies, props and special effects are enhanced by the aural image of an old-time player piano. 18 min. This screening will be followed by a playful debate between David Parker and Body Madness artist Douglas Dunn on the topic of wit vs. humor.
