Talk | Sweet, Sacred and Profane: Dessert in Kolkata

No nation is as obsessed with dessert as India and no Indian more passionate about sweets than a Bengali. In Kolkata, West Bengal's capital, it is hard to walk more than a block or two before stumbling onto a sweet shop. The state's sweet makers' association claims more than a 100,000 members, which comes as no surprise when you find out that per capita consumption here is about six times the national average. In this part of India there is a sweet for every occasion and no event is complete without a box from the neighborhood confectioner. Births, weddings and wakes are all celebrated with sugary creations. The gods all have their favorites and each puja (religious holiday) has its essential complement of treats. As part of his research on the history of dessert, Michael Krondl visited the city's oldest sweetshops, which have been in business for over a 150 years. The extensively illustrated lecture will focus on these sweetshops, their history but especially on the role sweets play in Hindu ritual and culture. Speaker: A former Writer in Residence in the Library’s Wertheim Study, Michael Krondl is a chef, food writer and artist. He is the author of Around the American Table: Treasured Recipes and Food Traditions from the American Cookery Collections of the New York Public Library and most recently The Taste of Conquest: The Rise and Fall of the Three Great Cities of Spice. He is currently finishing a book on the history of dessert.

Concert | Sergiu Schwartz, violin; Peter Basquin, piano

Sergiu Schwartz's international concert appearances have taken him to major music centers on three continents, including twenty European countries, Israel, and over forty U. S. states, as soloist with over two hundred leading orchestras, in recitals and chamber music concerts. "Following in the footsteps of his fellow countrymen Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman, he is a product of the best of European romantic interpretative style and 20th-Century American technical acuity," states New York's Newsday, while Le Soleil (Canada) notes that "he stands out as one of the best violinists of his generation." Comparing him to the greatest violinists, Fanfare - The Magazine for Serious Record Collectors, writes: his "warmth of sound and insight into the music raise to the level of expression achieved by Oistrakh" and his "tonal sheen approaches Milstein's." Recent solo orchestral engagements include the Dresden Staatskapelle, Jerusalem Symphony, London Symphony, and Dresden Philharmonic, among numerous others. He has performed in major concert halls, including New York's Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall; Kennedy Center (Washington); Barbican Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Wigmore Hall (London); Royce Hall (Los Angeles); and Academia Santa Cecilia (Rome), among many others. He has been featured in broadcasts for major radio and TV stations, including the BBC, NPR and CNN, and WXEL-TV's "Great Performances". Pianist Peter Basquin has performed throughout the United States with appearances at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, since winning the Montreal International Competition. His orchestral appearances include solos with the American Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Westchester Philharmonic, the Hunter Symphony, and the Montreal, Quebec, and Boston symphonies. He was a featured artist at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Dimitri Kozyrev's Last One

The exhibition will show Kozyrev’s works from the artist’s two latest series Lost Edge and Last One, in which his leitmotif is the ruin or fragment. The artist references totalitarian regimes, in particular the U.S.S.R. under Stalin, and its tendency to appropriate and/or censor all avant-garde movements. Kozyrev also alludes to artists such as Malevich and the Suprematist geometries of El Lissitzsky. The layers of pictorial elements and multiple perspective orientations provide a vertiginous experience, as if speeding though a landscape at great height. Kozyrev’s painterly vocabulary communicates a state of disorientation to the viewer by denying compositional unity and resolution.

Opening Reception | Drawing & Painting: Steve Johnson’s Flight Lessons

Steve Johnson’s solo exhibition plays with the social disparity between those with the power of flight and those who are grounded. Johnson has been captivated by the concept of flight since childhood, spending his time capturing, observing, and releasing birds much like a Darwinian naturalist. This detailed, observational approach and curiosity formed the foundation of Johnson’s delicate, yet energetic, style of draftsmanship. His grand social narrative unfolds with an anthropomorphic cast of chickadees and rats, heroic in all of their beauty and malice. Preceded by an artist's talk at 5:30pm.

Discussion | Global Migration Governance

In the context of the growing politicization of migration, a debate has emerged within policy and academia on the need to develop global governance on migration to facilitate better inter-state cooperation. However, this debate is taking place in the absence of a clear understanding of what global migration governance actually is and the basis on which we can make judgements about what "better" global migration governance might look like. Panelists who will examine these issues in the context of the recently published book Global Migration Governance include: Alexander Betts (Oxford University), Michele Klein-Solomon (International Organization for Migration), and Joseph Chamie (Center for Migration Studies). The discussion will be moderated by Alexandra Delano, assistant professor of Global Studies.

Opening Reception | Night Is Still Young

An exhibition by Tokyo- and Los Angeles-based photography artist Tomoaki Hata. The exhibition will run from March 10 to April 9, 2011. In recent news headlines, Japan, once Asia's economic superpower, has been portrayed as having lost its edge. Meanwhile, from the late 1990s to the early 2000s it became home to a vigorous burst of self-expression by one of the most secretive subcultures of Japanese society. Gender-bending men and women, who in their day-to-day lives conform to societal norms, began to gather weekly at small nightclubs in the gay district of Osaka to cut loose and be themselves. The epicenter of this phenomenon was a bar called Explosion, where radically creative, smart, and witty drag queens combined art and activism in a talent show format. In 1996, Hata, then a college student, began documenting these exuberant late-night parties and continued to do so until 2004. Now considered a rare chronicle of the nation's first drag queen movement, these photographs were edited as a monograph entitled The Night is Still Young and published both in Japanese (Akaakasha) and English (powerHouse Books) with an essay by Eric C. Shiner, Acting Director of the Andy Warhol Museum in 2010. This exhibition follows on the heel of its Tokyo debut last October and presents a selection of 25 images that highlight the movement's heyday in the early 2000s.

Opening Reception | Painting: Daniel Borlandelli's Vendaval

Borlandelli's explosive, multifaceted compositions employ dramatic use of color, as well as several distinct painting and construction techniques. Inspired by nature, he juxtaposes bold, gestural mark-making with jewel-like, tightly rendered symmetrical forms. Vendaval refers to a forceful wind capable of causing violent squalls. The howl of this invincible wind rages across the surface of Borlandelli's work. Shown: "Vendaval," 2010, acrylic on canvas, 68" x 84". Also opening: Water Play, photography by Roslyn Meyer.

Opening Reception | Painting: Jeff Muhs' Outliers

Jeff Muhs' new paintings manifest the sublime and visionary in soft forms and glowing color that bring to mind a kind of internal weather. Outlier is a term first used to describe scientific data that extends beyond the usual curve. Malcolm Gladwell defines "Outlier" as things or phenomenon that lie outside of normal experience, high impact, hard to predict and rare events that are beyond the normal realm of expectations, extreme observations, unexpected events of large magnitude and consequence that collectively play vastly larger roles than regular occurrences.

Author Reading | Richard Grossman reads from his book Unsettled Account: The Evolution of Banking in the Industrialized World Since 1800

Grossman reveals that many of the same components underlying the history of banking evolution are at work today. The recent subprime mortgage crisis had its origins, like many earlier banking crises, in a boom-bust economic cycle. Grossman finds that important historical elements are also at play in modern bailouts, merger movements, and regulatory reforms.

Discussion | The New York City Triangle Factory Fire

With Leigh Benin, Rob Linné, Adrienne Sosin, and Joel Sosinsky. On March 25, 1911, flames rapidly consumed everything within the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory, killing 146 workers. The victims, mostly young Jewish and Italian immigrant women, died needlessly due to unsafe working conditions, such as locked or blocked doors, narrow stairways, faulty fire escapes, and a lack of sprinklers. Until September 11, 2001, the Triangle fire was the deadliest workplace disaster in New York City history. Mass grief and outrage spread from New York's Lower East Side across the country. Garment union membership swelled, and New York politics shifted dramatically toward reform, paving the way for the New Deal and, ultimately, the workplace standards expected today.

Poetry Reading | The Poetry of Illumination

In his lifetime, Sri Chinmoy wrote thousands of poems, both in his native Bengali and English. His poetry-journey spanned over half a century and encompassed themes of philosophy, prayer, religion, spirituality, nature's beauty, his love of the English language and the exploration of word-making and his abiding love, concern and hope for the world. This presentation of his poems and music offers a glimpse of the unique work of this seer-poet, whose poetry envisions the present, past and future all at once. Led by Bhikshuni Weisbrot, award winning poet and president of the United Nations Society of Writers.

He offered the world the message of faith, dignity and the rights of man, sacred and undeniable rights given by the hand of nature and beyond the just reach of any government. In this presentation, learn about the little known spiritual life of Thomas Jefferson, his private faith and life philosophy, his lifelong advocacy of religious freedom as our most important freedom, his love of nature, his views on the Bible, and the significance of the “Pursuit of Happiness.” Presented by Eric S. Pedersen, managing partner at the New York law firm of Hawkins Delafield & Wood LLP. Pedersen was educated at Brown University and the University of Chicago Law School, and Since 1993 he has been an avid scholar of Jefferson’s life and works, and in this capacity has appeared on several major news networks including CNN, CNBC, and FOX.
