They show documentary videos created for the project, including Dancing in Water: the Making of River (2009), The Retrospective Project (2009), and Naked: A Gallery View (2010). Eiko & Koma are known for groundbreaking dance works that stretch the boundaries of the art form. Their subjects are elemental; their message is blunt yet compassionate. Talk | A Discussion of the MOMA Exhibition Contemporary Art from the Collection

With Jennifer Katanic. The works selected for this installation highlight the debates around economics, politics, gender, and ethnicity that have permeated artistic practices since the late 1960s. Including approximately 130 works drawn from all of the Museum's curatorial departments, the installation features a variety of approaches to art-making and follows a chronological path. The exhibition begins with works such as a haunting “body print” by David Hammons (1969), which depicts the artist in an act of prayer, and Pino Pascali's Machine Gun (1966), a sculpture he made out of parts from a Fiat 500 during a period of intense social unrest in Italy. Concluding the show are two projects that explore larger themes of humanity and loss through current events: Huma Bhabha’s expansive print series Reconstructions (2007), in which the artist memorializes lost civilizations in her native Pakistan, and Paul Chan's Waiting for Godot (2007), a project based on the artist's restaging of Samuel Beckett's play in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Lecture | The Labor Of Care: Rethinking Gender, Work, and Rights in the American Welfare State

A lecture with Jennifer Klein. Once considered economically marginal, jobs in nursing, home health care, and childcare have moved to the center of the economy. Jennifer Klein will reconsider the history of the American welfare state from the perspective of care work. What will define work, rights, security, and dignity amid the new care-work economy? Organizing for workers’ rights, dignity, and autonomy has required new kinds of strategies and alliances that reflect the interdependence of social needs and an emphasis on the value of care labor itself. Jennifer Klein is professor of history at Yale University and author of the award-winning book For All These Rights: Business, Labor, and the Shaping of America’s Public-Private Welfare State.

Screening | Regretters (Ångrarna), an award-winning Swedish feature documentary

Regretters (Ångrarna), an award-winning Swedish feature documentary directed by Marcus Lindeen. The screening is followed by a talk by the director as well as a public reception. About the Film: Regretters tells the story of Orlando and Mikael, two Swedish men who both went under the knife and became women, only to realize that, for them, changing their sex was a big mistake. In this amazing and beautiful portrait, the two men meet for the first time to talk about their lives. They get together on stage in a dark TV studio and discuss their subsequent lives in a remarkable discourse on repression, self-identity and the nature of gender and being. Regretters won the award for Best Documentary Production in Europe at Prix Europa in Berlin (2010), and the Guldbagge Award for Best Documentary in 2010, an award presented by the Swedish Film Institute to honor the best in Swedish cinema. Other awards include the Jury Prize at Hamburg International Queer Film Festival (2010); and Best Documentary at Queer Lisboa Film Festival (2010).

Opening Reception | Acclaimed author Thelma Adams and celebrated NYC poet Mahogany L. Brown

On the second Tuesday of each month from September through May, Pen Parentis brings notable authors to Lower Manhattan to build a special kind of downtown literary community. Founder and Executive Director, M. M. De Voe, a Downtown resident and published author, says of the organization’s goals, “Parenthood doesn’t mean the demise of a creative career; a pacifier is not the end of edgy.” All authors presented by Pen Parentis maintain successful literary careers while balancing the demands of family life. The events are open to all — you don’t have to be a parent or a writer to enjoy the readings and the cozy atmosphere at the bar. Both of the writers presented are parents of young children, and each will have 20 minutes to present new work. The readings will be followed by a brief interview and individual book signings. Pen Parentis Literary Salons are beautiful, elegant and distinctive events. The event is free and open to the public, with drink specials, networking opportunities, and book signings.
