Lecture | Creating Proper Men: Masculinities, Embodiment & Agency in the West Bank

A Brown Bag Lunch Talk with Maria Malmström, who will discuss constructions of gender, embodiment and agency among male Hamas youths in the West Bank through the prism of violence. She will highlight the importance of analyzing the body in such processes – both as agential and as victimized. To be able to move away from the sensationalist Western media that often portray Middle Eastern Muslim men as ‘violent’, and as terrorists, we need to understand the motivations and the meanings of violence. This talk will discuss constructions of masculinities in a complex interplay of violence, political Islam, suffering and loss. The method of analysis is to use a discourse-centered approach and to use experience-near ethnography that begins with men’s own practices and attends to how they understand themselves, how their bodies are involved in this process, and how they live out norms and ideologies in their everyday lives. Thereby we are able to understand how men’s realities and identities are interpreted, negotiated and constructed and how the body actively is involved in these processes. This approach is relevant since it is possible to analyze the singularity of experience, not only as a form of social interaction, but as linked to social structures and discourses, which implies negotiations of tensions, conflicts, and uncertainties.

Lecture | Improvisation as a Way of Life: Reflections on Human Interaction

A lecture given by George E. Lewis, Edwin H. Case Professor of American Music. Many musical improvisers have understood their sounds and practices as addressing larger questions of identity and social organization, as well as creating politically inflected, critically imbued aesthetic spaces. Following a 1964 suggestion by Alfred Schutz that a study of the social relationships connected with the musical process may lead to some insights valid for many other forms of social intercourse, the realization that improvisation is not limited to the artistic domain, but is a ubiquitous aspect of everyday life, can lead humanists and scientists toward new models of intelligibility, agency, ethics, technology, and social transformation. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience. Reception to follow in the Faculty Room.

Slide Lecture | Eye on the Wall: Observations on Street Art

An unruly stepchild of the graffiti era, street art is a global art movement well into its third decade and still going strong. While graffiti is traditionally limited to the aerosol arts, street art knows no such boundaries. Street artists make full use of traditional as well as digital media and are equally as likely to be self-taught as classically trained artists. Regardless of its origins, all street art is united in the fight against time, the elements, property owners and the general public, all forces which conspire to varying degrees towards eradicating it. Street art, therefore, is an ephemeral art form, largely unseen outside the circle of practitioners and followers. Is it any wonder that it goes unnoticed, being but one component in an increasingly oversaturated, urban landscape? Join street art photographer Luna Park for a slideshow and discussion of works by some of the most talented artists working the streets.

Talk | I SHALL NOT HATE: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity

“As I have said many times since the tragedy, if I could know that my daughters were the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis, then I would accept their loss.” – Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, author of “I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity” will speak about his resolve to fight for Palestinian-Israeli reconciliation, strengthened in the wake of devastating family tragedy. Described as “a necessary lesson against hatred and revenge” by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, Abuelaish wrote his book after his Gaza Strip home was hit by Israeli shells, killing three of his daughters and his niece in January 2009. Rather than seek revenge, his plea for understanding has thrust him onto the world stage as a unique voice of humanitarianism, emphasizing the need for mutual respect, consideration and forgiveness. The book also recounts Abuelaish’s upbringing in the refugee camps of Gaza and how education enabled him to move up and out.
