Conference | Translating the Encyclopédie in the Global Eighteenth Century

Published in Paris between 1751 and 1772, in 17 volumes of text and 11 volumes of plates, the Encyclopédie contains some 77,000 articles written by more than 140 contributors. It mobilized many of the great – and the not-so-great – philosophes of the eighteenth century, and presented itself as an all-encompassing reference work for the arts and sciences, while at the same time serving as a war machine for the Enlightenment. This colloquium is part of a series initiated by the ARTFL project at the University of Chicago around the digitization of the Encyclopédie. The 2011 installment of this annual colloquium focuses on the idea of translation.

Performance | Maybe I should have called it 'My Life in Nineteen Minutes': A 12-Hour Art Event

Taking its name from Alexander Calder's response to 'Work in Progress,' his 1968 theatrical production, Maybe I should have called it 'My Life in Nineteen Minutes' is a twelve-hour one-day event that presents a continuous series of artist film screenings, performances, and music. Influenced by Calder's investigations into improvisational performance, appropriated materials and continual change through the development of his iconic 'mobiles,' Maybe I should have called it 'My Life in Nineteen Minutes' will traverse history by reading it through the present moment, zigzagging through different scenarios via the slippage of time and space. It will engage an active audience through different media and temporalities via numerous set-changes, playfully interrogating life's intermissions. Artists: Dara Birnbaum, Steven Cairns, Alexander Calder, Mike Cooter, Friends, Michael Fullerton, Nick Hallett & Brock Monroe, Phillipa Horan, Yves Klein, Torsten Lauschmann, Gordon Matta-Clark & Jamie Davidovich, Herbert Matter, Matt McCormick, Rivane Neuenschwander, Tony Oursler, PC Worship, Pablo Pijnappel, Sally Potter, Laure Prouvost, Hans Richter, Giles Round, Holton Rower, Gryphon Rue, Snowden Snowden, Corin Sworn, Mika Tajima, Alexis Marguerite Teplin, Cara Tolmie, White Suns, William Wegman

Author Reading | Authors and Adventure Travelers Jon and Pamela Voelkel BRING MAYA CULTURE AND HISTORY TO LIFE

Authors Jon and Pamela Voelkel traveled with their three children across Central America to over thirty Maya sites in Belize, Guatemala and Mexico, canoeing underground rivers, tracking howler monkeys in the jungle, and exploring temples, caves and catacombs as part of their research on Maya culture. These adventures made it into the first book of The Jaguar Stones trilogy, Middleworld. The book received rave reviews and was featured on the “Today” show as an Al Roker’s Book Club for Kids pick. Now, the Voelkels, adorned in their safari gear, are back with the second book in the series, The End of the World Club. This time, the action moves to Spain on the trail of the conquistadors who tried to destroy Maya culture. The Voelkels explored ancient castles and monasteries filled with secret passageways, trekked out to the wild and windswept Coast of Death and investigated the many uniquely Spanish superstitions, customs and eccentric festivals - such as La Tomatina, the world's biggest food fight, in which participants hurl ripe tomatoes at each other in the streets. The Voelkels’ fast-paced and exciting presentation for The End of the World Club includes tips for surviving in the jungles of the Maya, tales of their adventures in Central America and Spain, the truth about 2012, some crazy rock 'n' roll, and a signing with Mayan Glyphs.

Stacy Spence, a former member of Trisha Brown Company (1997-2006), collaborates with sound artist Tei Blow on a duet that considers the influences of environment on a person, how a person relates to a particular space they find themselves in, and the impetus for creativity that stems from that interaction.

Opening Reception | Andrés Basurto Inspired By a True Story and Fahamu Pecou ART HISTORY neXt

Mexican artist Andrés Basurto's glass mosaic sculptures deal with the act of construction through the action of destruction. Using shards from glass bottles that at one time held wine and beer, Basurto molds the raw material into specific shapes that evoke the human skull and skeleton as a container of the soul. Fahamu Pecou's latest series of paintings entitled ART HISTORY neXt finds the artist examining and appropriating famous images from the twentieth century and reinterpreting them through his own self-portrait prism

Theater | New York Classical Theatre presents The Rover by Aphra Behn

In The Rover, everyone dresses up in costume during the festive days of Carnevale (Mardi Gras). Hidden behind their masks, the men drink and draw their weapons at the slightest provocation, while the women are given the freedom to say and act as they please. Aphra Behn, the first professional female playwright in the English language, lets us see what happens when women are freed from societal conventions to live their lives on their own terms without consideration of social class or fortune! New York Classical Theatre, the company that brought William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Prince of Denmark to life last season, presents The Rover in their signature staging style, panoramic theatre, transforming the space into the wild world of Carnevale in 17th-Century Naples, Italy.
