Public Displays of (self) Affection or PD(s)A is a radically real, arched-eyebrow wry, self-consciously ridiculous protest piece that demands not to be taken seriously. Play | The Lady of the Camellias: Tragic Love Story of a Courtesan and a Young Bourgeois

A new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's story combines dialogue from Dumas' novel (considerably different from Dumas's stage play) with text and structural concepts from the libretto of the opera "La Traviata." The fully-realized production is performed inside the open-air walls of the venue. Set in mid-19th century France, a courtesan suffering from consumption named Marguerite (and nicknamed "The Lady of the Camellias" because she wears a red camellia when she is indisposed, and a white camellia when she is available to her lovers), and Armand, a young bourgeois, fall in love. After Armand convinces her to leave her courtesan life to live with him in the countryside, their plan is interrupted by Armand's father Georges Duval who is concerned with the scandal created by the illicit relationship that will destroy his son's future. Marguerite agrees to sacrifice herself for Armand's family and leaves him. When Armand shows up at her deathbed thinking she left him for another man, he pledges to love her even after her death.

Lecture | Cross-Dressing: Fashion and Gender Expression in the Eighteenth Century

Cross-dressing is a plot device in many 18th-century plays and stories, but what did it mean when real people put on the clothing associated with the opposite sex? Join Amelia Rauser, the Charles A. Dana Professor of Art History and Senior Associate Dean of the Faculty at Franklin & Marshall College, for a look at a few historical case studies of 18th-century cross-dressers and note the diverse historical circumstances that influenced their public gender expression. Amelia Rauser's most recent book, The Age of Undress: Art, Fashion, and the Classical Ideal in the 1790s, considered the meaning of the white, high-waisted empire-style dress and how it intersected with women's artistic and intellectual ambitions in the late 18th-century. Her current projects center on fashion and illness, political fashion, and the colonialist trade in textiles during the 18th century. 18th-Century Style is highly encouraged.

Concert | Up-and-Coming Bands Play in the Park

Up-and-coming bands perform at the annual showcase Bound by circumstance, identity, and creative spirit, three trans multi-instrumentalists founded Thus Love in 2018 in Brattleboro, Vermont. But the shared experience of Echo Marshall, Lu Racine, and Nathaniel van Osdol runs much deeper, tracing its roots to poor, rural towns where it was difficult to find communities to call their own. That feeling of loss and solitary longing has also, paradoxically, cemented their powerfully close connection in THUS LOVE. The band lived together in a one-bedroom apartment above downtown Brattleboro during the entire recording process of their debut album, Memorial, with Marshall cordoning off a room to build a studio from scratch. Psymon Spine’s origins date back to Noah Prebish and Peter Spears meeting in college and finding common ground in their artistic aims: “We wanted to make something that was experimental, but also accessible and satisfying,” Prebish states while discussing the thrust of the band’s origins, citing influences like Talking Heads and Os Mutantes along with the rush of the NYC dance scene. Eventually, Brother Michael joined Psymon Spine, as the trio hashed out the demos for what would become their debut, 2017’s ‘You Are Coming to My Birthday’. Katy Kirby is a songwriter and indie rock practitioner with a writerly focus on unspoken rules, misunderstandings of all kinds, and boredom. Kirby was born, raised, and homeschooled by two ex-cheerleaders in small-town Texas, where she started singing in church amidst the soaring, pasteurized-pop choruses of evangelical worship services. After high school, Kirby moved to Nashville, where she managed to graduate college with a rapidly expanding circle of artistic allies, an amorphous collection of leftist beliefs, and a few handfuls of songs. After a series of painful failures to complete a record that reflected the temperament of those songs, Kirby finally turned to dear friends and co-conspirators to form a band capable of constructing a satisfying full length.

Andrew, the gay eldest grandson to a famous Ukrainian watchmaker, feels an urgent need to pay his patriotism forward to his nephew in the face of Russia's ongoing invasion.
