Opening Reception | Defiant Visions: 3D Exhibition Tour (online)

Curator Marie Meyerding leads a 3D tour and discussion of the exhibition. Photographs of apartheid South Africa have travelled the world as testimonies to the horrors people of colour experienced under a legislative system of institutionalised discrimination which was in place between 1948 and 1994. Images of boycotts, protest marches, funerals, necklacings and dead Black bodies came to determine the worldwide media coverage on South Africa. As important as this anti-apartheid imagery, which is now referred to as struggle photography, was and is in testifying to the violence that dominated the country, its imminence overshadows an archive showcasing people's ordinary struggles. Moreover, due to not only race- but also gender-discriminatory economic and political structures prevailing at the time, the country's photography scene was largely dominated by men and white people.

Dance Performance | The Piers Project: 2 Dance Companies Remember the West Village's Sexual Freedom

The Piers Project, a co-production of Matthew Westerby Company and Hudson Guild Theatre Company, is inspired by the history and documentation of the world that existed on Manhattan's west side piers in the 1970s and 80s. In the post-Stonewall era, the area became a space of sexual freedom and creative expression among the crumbling relics of the piers. Through photographs and first-hand written accounts capturing the scene, dancers imagine the moments and movements that occurred there, creating a dance work that evokes the freedom, exuberance, anonymity, and dangers of the piers during this time. The program will feature the premiere of Life/Space, a dance work performed by the seven women of MWC inspired by Gestalt psychological theory, which places an emphasis on perception and how we use our senses to understand the world around us. The piece explores a humanistic approach to the study of the individual and how the forces of attraction and repulsion affect our paths through space and time.

Opening Reception | Plant a Weed: Group Show

The artists offer an expansion of systems, of publics, and a glimpse into the lives lived and loved within the urban ecosystem. They explore the alternative possibilities of street detritus, both natural and manufactured; hard-shell tacos, paper towels, Windex, egg shells, cigarettes, lollipops, plastic, leather and an assortment of mixed debris coagulate to create new ecologies. Scurrying critters become the de facto cohabitors you never knew you had. An attempt to quell the “chaos” takes place under the Adams administration in the form of the ‘Rat Tzar’, a Sisyphean display of control during a generation-defining housing and medical crisis. Amid meticulously manicured patches of corporate lawn and lush planters, invasive weeds resolutely disrupt the imposed order of the grid. In this whimsical interplay of encounters, the resilience of artists thriving in the city is evident, as they subvert the borders between the haves and the have-nots, the locals and the interlopers, the perfect specimens and the refuse. The weed will always prevail. Featuring a selection of new and existing works by sixteen artists including Salome Asega, Michael Assiff, Saif Azzuz, Ragini Bhow, Justin Chance, Justin Cloud, Antonia Kuo, Aryana Minai, Christine Egaña Navin, Em Rooney, Emma Safir, Rodrigo Red Sandoval, Tamara Santibañez, Sydney Shen, Molly Soda, and Monsieur Zohore.

Play | The Lady of the Camellias: Tragic Love Story of a Courtesan and a Young Bourgeois

A new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's story combines dialogue from Dumas’ novel (considerably different from Dumas’s stage play) with text and structural concepts from the libretto of the opera “La Traviata.” The fully-realized production is performed inside the open-air walls of the venue. Set in mid-19th century France, a courtesan suffering from consumption named Marguerite (and nicknamed “The Lady of the Camellias" because she wears a red camellia when she is indisposed, and a white camellia when she is available to her lovers), and Armand, a young bourgeois, fall in love. After Armand convinces her to leave her courtesan life to live with him in the countryside, their plan is interrupted by Armand's father Georges Duval who is concerned with the scandal created by the illicit relationship that will destroy his son’s future. Marguerite agrees to sacrifice herself for Armand’s family and leaves him. When Armand shows up at her deathbed thinking she left him for another man, he pledges to love her even after her death.
