Play | The Lady of the Camellias: Tragic Love Story of a Courtesan and a Young Bourgeois

A new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's story combines dialogue from Dumas' novel (considerably different from Dumas's stage play) with text and structural concepts from the libretto of the opera "La Traviata." The fully-realized production is performed inside the open-air walls of the venue. Set in mid-19th century France, a courtesan suffering from consumption named Marguerite (and nicknamed "The Lady of the Camellias" because she wears a red camellia when she is indisposed, and a white camellia when she is available to her lovers), and Armand, a young bourgeois, fall in love. After Armand convinces her to leave her courtesan life to live with him in the countryside, their plan is interrupted by Armand's father Georges Duval who is concerned with the scandal created by the illicit relationship that will destroy his son's future. Marguerite agrees to sacrifice herself for Armand's family and leaves him. When Armand shows up at her deathbed thinking she left him for another man, he pledges to love her even after her death.

Dance Performance | Contemporary Dance: Two of New York's Extraordinary Percussive Dance Artists

Josh Johnson is a Harlem native, who tap-danced on the trains of New York City to pay for college at Penn State University. The New York Times and Reader's Digest have covered his amazing story of hard work, persistence and positivity. Since Spring of 2012, Josh has appeared in many Jazz Clubs of New York City, keeping in the tradition of the African American tap masters such as The Nicholas brothers, The Berry Brothers, the Original Hoofers and The Copasetics; and performing for audiences big and small. A Brooklyn-born Puerto-Rican from New Haven, a Mexican Puerto-Rican Jew from the Lower East Side, and a Bengali Indian from Jersey walked on to the wooden floor & the rest? History. Bonded by their deep love of music, their crafts, and true connection, Soles of Duende is on a lifelong mission to elevate the joy and music of true collaboration across disciplines and the celebration of the forms they practice. Based in the sounds of Tap (Amanda Castro), Flamenco (Arielle Rosales) and Kathak (Brinda Guha), Soles of Duende's fire is the spirit that lives within each of these women to celebrate their connection given their beautiful differences and to uplift the forms that made them.

Dancing | Dance the Hustle with Maria Torres and Members of the Hustle Community

The Jerome Robbins Dance Division welcomes dancer and choreographer Maria Torres to a two-week residency to gather community history about the Hustle. The Hustle was a dance developed in the 70s discos first by Puerto Rican teens, but has since expanded across the U.S. Today, the Hustle scene in New York City is still particularly vibrant. While Torres has extensive experience directing choreography in theater, film, and television, she got her start performing the Hustle in the Bronx as a teenager. Through this residency, Torres will help build the archive around the Hustle community and eventually add it to the Dance Division for future generations. In the first week of the residency, Torres invites elders from the Hustle community to contribute their stories, dance moves, and history. The residency will be fully documented to be added to the archive, and eventually these recordings can be accessed by future generations so that Hustle lives on forever. Reservation required. Seating is granted on a first come first serve basis. Five minutes before showtime, seats will be given out to people on the wait list regardless of reservation status.

Concert | Singer-Songwriters from North African and Brazilian Traditions

Brooklyn-based singer Laura Elkeslassy crafts music that reclaims Judeo-Arab cultural heritage from North Africa, infusing ancient tradition with a modern feminist perspective. Elkeslassy musically excavates her family's history in Morocco, France, and Israel, coming face-to-face with forgotten ancestors and reclaiming a lost family name. Developed in collaboration with music director Ira Khonen Temple, this project weaves together the stories of Judeo-Arab divas from the last century with new performances of folk and sacred music. Alexia Bomtempo and Stephane San Juan met over a decade ago in the vibrant music scene of Rio de Janeiro. They later reconnected in New York where they began a fruitful musical collaboration that resulted in Alexia's critically acclaimed jazz-meets-bossa-nova album Suspiro. Now based in Brooklyn, they continue to explore and push the boundaries of contemporary songwriting. Their current repertoire is a blend of styles ranging from Brazilian samba jazz to modern French song.
