Discussion | Max Weinreich and the Meaning of Yiddish (online)

Max Weinreich spent the entirety of his adult life building YIVO and the field of Yiddish Studies. A 'convert' to the cause of Yiddishism in his adolescence, he pursued a doctorate in German philology in Weimar Germany with the explicit goal of returning to Eastern Europe to contribute to the project of building a modern, secular Yiddish culture. His study visits to Yale University and Vienna in the early 1930s proved transformational in broadening and revising his understanding of the role of the social sciences in Jewish life as a tool for strengthening Jews' psychological and material resources. The destruction of the traditional Yiddish heartland in Eastern Europe and his experiences leading YIVO in post-WWII New York City added yet another dimension to Weinreich's conception of the importance of both Yiddish and Jewish Studies for the future of American and world Jewry. Would Max Weinreich recognize Yiddish studies today? Moderated by Kalman Weiser and featuring Naomi Seidman, Kenneth Moss, and Jeffrey Shandler, this panel will examine Weinreich's evolving understanding of the meaning of Yidishe visnshaft (Yiddish studies) and the role of Yiddish in Jewish life throughout his career.

Book Discussion | The Book of Eve: Her Version of Genesis (online)

A striking example of translation and its many layers—of language, of myth, of tradition—Mexican author Carmen Boullosa’s The Book of Eve (El libro de Eva) twists, challenges, and ultimately revises a classic tale for a contemporary moment. As Eve, fueled by “fiery disobedience,” tells her own version of the Book of Genesis, she brazenly rejects the stories that have oppressed women across millennia. No, she was not created from Adam’s rib; no, she was not expelled from the Garden of Eden for nibbling a forbidden apple; and no, humanity was not deluged by a great flood. Translator Samantha Schnee and Boullosa will have a conversation about translation twice (and sometimes thrice) over.

Film | The Rainmaker (1956) with Burt Lancaster and Katharine Hepburn

During the Great Depression, a drought is wreaking havoc on a small, destitute Kansas town. Bill Starbuck, a slick grifter, arrives in town, promising he can make it rain in exchange for $100. His offer is accepted by H. C. Curry, a rancher whose spinster daughter, Lizzie, is desperate for a suitor. Lizzie finally finds confidence when Starbuck, ever the smooth talker, convinces her she's beautiful. Director: Joseph Anthony Cast: Burt Lancaster, Katharine Hepburn, Wendell Corey Burt Lancaster was an American actor and producer. Initially known for playing tough guys with a tender heart, he went on to achieve success with more complex and challenging roles over a 45-year career in films and television. He was a four-time nominee for the Academy Award for Best Actor (winning once), and he also won one Golden Globe Award for Best Lead Actor. The American Film Institute ranks Lancaster as #19 of the greatest male stars of classic Hollywood cinema. Katharine Hepburn was an American actress whose career as a Hollywood leading lady spanned over six decades. She was known for her headstrong independence, spirited personality, and outspokenness. She cultivated a screen persona that matched this public image and regularly playing strong-willed, sophisticated women. Her work was in a range of genres, from screwball comedy to literary drama, earning her various accolades, including four Academy Awards for Best Actress—a record for any performer. In 1999, Hepburn was named the greatest female star of classic Hollywood cinema by the American Film Institute.

Film | To Sir, With Love (1967) with Sidney Poitier

Engineer Mark Thackeray arrives to teach a totally undisciplined class of white high school students at an East End school. Still hoping for a good engineering job, he's hopeful that he won't be there long. He starts implementing his own brand of classroom discipline: forcing the pupils to treat each other with respect. Inevitably he begins getting involved in the students' personal lives, and must avoid the advances of an amorous student while winning over the class tough. What will he decide when the engineering job comes through? Director: James Clavell Cast: Sidney Poitier, Judy Geeson, Christian Roberts, Suzy Kendall, Faith Brook Sidney Poitier was a Bahamian and American actor, film director, and diplomat. In 1964, he was the first black actor and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He received two competitive Golden Globe Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. Staged Reading | S P A C E: Trailblazing Women Astronauts

Drawing on history and imagining the future, S P A C E unearths the forces at work in our own time. Before any human travels to space, thirteen female pilots excel at the medical testing to become astronauts. Their story collides with the pilots and astronauts across time—like Bessie Coleman, Hazel Ying Lee and Jasmin Moghbeli—who burst their own path in, out, and up. Through transcript, fiction, feats of endurance, and the ridiculous, S P A C E takes us into moments of expansive missions, lays bare invisible forces at work, and brings us close to the personal side of facing them. It asks: What is the mission of our time? And will we fulfill or betray it? Written by L M Feldman.

Discussion | Germans in America: Untold Stories

Helmut Fischer, Mary Lea Enderle, and Thomas Enderle will discuss three largely untold stories of early German immigrants in this country. The first story is an overview of Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), which used to occupy what's now known as the East Village and the Lower East Side. Story two is the rags-to-riches journey by Pieter Claesen Wyckoff in 1637 from a farmhouse in East Frisia (northwestern region of Germany) to a farm of his own in New Amsterdam -- now a museum in Brooklyn. The last story is about the exodus of East Frisians in the mid-1800s to the Midwest, in search of farms of their own. About the Speakers Helmut Fischer is a local historian and teacher in Norden, Germany. He is the president of the Upstalsboom Society, which has connected many Midwestern Americans to their German roots in East Frisia. Mary Lea Enderle has worked in creative roles at higher educational institutions, most recently for Columbia University. She is half German American and has resided in the East Village for nearly 20 years. Thomas Enderle was born in Japan to German parents. Trained as a lawyer, he worked for three decades in Hamburg, Germany as a director and board member of an international company. He is thrilled to now be living in what was once known as Kleindeutschland.

Opening Reception | Baldur Helgason: Acts of Worship

This exhibition features the artist’s latest paintings created during the winter of 2022-23. The body of work reveals the artist's personal exploration of spirituality, life’s purpose and self-discovery. These works were created in the darkest depths of Icelandic winter. With as little as four hours of sunlight per day, the artist found himself immersed in a literal darkness that mirrored the bleakness of the world around him. Helgason found motivation in his environment as it became the catalyst for a transformative and introspective process. He honed in on the challenging emotions and embraced them as a wellspring of inspiration. In distinctly Nordic terms, the darkness itself became Baldur's muse and guiding light. Appropriately, this series of paintings is unveiled at the height of summer during the longest days of the year.

Discussion | Threads of Knowledge: The Significance of Quilting (online)

Artists Dindga McCannon and Aliyah Bonnette in an intergenerational conversation about the significance of quilting What that Quilt Knows About Me explores the capacity of quilts to record and pass down community and family histories. Included in the exhibition is Dindga McCannon's quilt-like piece Mary Lou Williams - Jazz Pianist. In this textile homage to "the greatest woman jazz pianist in the world," the Harlem artist captures her neighborhood's culturally rich environment while highlighting the vibrancy of Williams's music and her contribution to the legacy of jazz. In this program, McCannon will discuss the creative process behind the making of Mary Lou Williams - Jazz Pianist. She will share how she combines found objects, paint, photographs and fibers to create a powerful portrait of a Black woman artist and to tell her story. Like McCannon, textile artist Aliyah Bonnette learned quilting from women in her family. "By incorporating the very fabrics and unfinished quilts [my late grandmother] touched and sewed herself [in the 1970's], my practice becomes a space to stitch together the stories and memories of Black women across generations," she stated.

Book Club | Black Cake: A Novel by Charmaine Wilkerson

In this moving debut novel, two estranged siblings must set aside their differences to deal with their mother's death and her hidden past — a journey of discovery that takes them from the Caribbean to London to California and ends with her famous black cake. In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett's death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a traditional Caribbean black cake, made from a family recipe with a long history, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking journey Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child, challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their family, and themselves.  Charmaine Wilkerson's debut novel is a story of how the inheritance of betrayals, secrets, memories, and even names, can shape relationships and history. Deeply evocative and beautifully written, Black Cake is an extraordinary journey through the life of a family changed forever by the choices of its matriarch. Registration required.

Play | The Lady of the Camellias: Tragic Love Story of a Courtesan and a Young Bourgeois

A new adaptation of Alexandre Dumas's story combines dialogue from Dumas’ novel (considerably different from Dumas’s stage play) with text and structural concepts from the libretto of the opera “La Traviata.” The fully-realized production is performed inside the open-air walls of the venue. Set in mid-19th century France, a courtesan suffering from consumption named Marguerite (and nicknamed “The Lady of the Camellias" because she wears a red camellia when she is indisposed, and a white camellia when she is available to her lovers), and Armand, a young bourgeois, fall in love. After Armand convinces her to leave her courtesan life to live with him in the countryside, their plan is interrupted by Armand's father Georges Duval who is concerned with the scandal created by the illicit relationship that will destroy his son’s future. Marguerite agrees to sacrifice herself for Armand’s family and leaves him. When Armand shows up at her deathbed thinking she left him for another man, he pledges to love her even after her death.

Book Discussion | The Dissident: Jewish Refuseniks in Moscow

Paul Goldberg's novel is a thrilling, witty, and slyly original Cold War mystery about a ragtag group of Jewish refuseniks in Moscow. On his wedding day in 1976, Viktor Moroz stumbles upon a murder scene: two gay men, one of them a U.S. official, have been axed to death in Moscow. Viktor, a Jewish refusenik, is stuck in the Soviet Union because the government has denied his application to leave for Israel; he sits “in refusal” alongside his wife and their group of intellectuals, Jewish and not. But the KGB spots Viktor leaving the murder scene. Plucked off the street, he’s given a choice: find the murderer or become the suspect of convenience. His deadline is nine days later, when Henry Kissinger will be arriving in Moscow. Unsolved ax murders, it seems, aren’t good for politics.

Pop musician and songwriter Jake Wesley Rogers headlines a night of powerful queer storytelling. A spirit enveloped and transformed by music, Rogers learned early how to generate connection through songwriting. About the Artists Pop musician Jake Wesley Rogers has had accolades heaped upon him by the likes of major magazines and media outlets such as Billboard, Rolling Stone, and Vogue - who profiled Jake for their Youthquake project as a Gen Z creator who is pushing the conversation forward - as well as GLAAD - for whom Jake was nominated this year for Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist, alongside a show-stopping performance at the ceremony. Then there are people like Elton John (who had Jake perform with Grammy-winning Brandi Carlile at his feted 30th annual Oscar-viewing AIDS foundation benefit this spring), Kate Hudson, and countless other A-list devotees who've flocked to the singer-songwriter's pulpit over the past few years. Jackson served as the third National Youth Poet Laureate from 2019-2020. She is the author of Bloodstone Cowboy (Haymarket Books, 2019). Discussion | Gender and Sexuality in Egon Schiele's Work

Jane Kallir, Schiele scholar and Director of the Kallir Research Institute, will be joined by a panel of speakers spanning the disciplines of art history, queer studies and gender studies, for an interdisciplinary examination of the artist’s world and work. The panel includes: Jane Kallir, President of the Kallir Research Institute and Director of the Galerie St. Etienne Jonathan D. Katz, Associate Professor of Practice, History of Art and Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies, University of Pennsylvania (pre-recorded statement) Verena Gamper, Curator at Österreichische Galerie Belvedere David Rimanelli, Writer and Contributing Editor at Artforum Egon Schiele came of age during a period of contrast between bourgeois norms and the realities of contemporary sexual experience. Schiele is principally known for his unconventional, often unsettling depictions of the female nude. His connection to and depictions of a cadre of gay and bisexual men (Max Oppenheimer, Willy Lidl, and Erwin Osen), however, spark compelling questions surrounding his unique interpretations of human sexuality.

Concert | You Are My Friend: A Concert Tribute to Sylvester

One of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Sylvester rose to the top of the charts in the late '70s with dancefloor classics like "You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)" and "Dance (Disco Heat)." Scoring 24 Top-40 hits over his career, Sylvester had an ethereal falsetto, gender-bending style, and a flamboyant fashion sense. One of the first openly gay artists in disco and R&B, Sylvester helped blaze a trail for out-of-the-closet LGBTQIA+ music superstars to follow. Featuring musical direction by acclaimed music scholar Jason King, this joyous tribute features musical guests like folk musician Anjimile; club/dance music icon Kevin Aviance; golden-voiced house and dance music hitmaker Inaya Day; Grammy-nominated recording artist and Broadway performer Mykal Kilgore; singer-songwriter Dawn Richard; and Chicago house music legend Byron Stingily.

Book Discussion | Bill Pedersen: Gesture and Response

Legendary architect and founder of Kohn Pedersen Fox, Bill Pedersen will present excerpts from his book Gesture and Response which is an inversion of one's initial perception when referring to architecture. In Pedersen's thesis, "the place offers the gesture and architecture is the response."The articles and buildings span 45 years of the architect’s career as KPF’s influence and global footprint grew. The presentation is not organized chronologically, as is the book: it will begin with the small and end large. Regardless of scale the same aspiration applies: his chairs are a response to the gesture of the human body and his tallest buildings are a response to connecting earth to sky in a specific place.

Concert | Singer-Songwriter-Guitarist from Colombia

Colombian singer-songwriter Mónica Giraldo is renowned for both her fluency on acoustic guitar and her beautifully nuanced original compositions. A nominee for Best New Artist at the Latin Grammy Awards, Giraldo's rootsy playing style and liltingly melodic voice give beautiful character to her warm approach to pop folk. Giraldo's soothing ballads are layered with influences from beyond her native Bogotá, suggesting a wandering ear that finds inspiration in the creativity, spirit and sound of folk singer-songwriters around the world, the Colombian Caribbean rhythms and the Latin American Classics. Giraldo's formal training as an architect can be clearly heard in her love for design and sound construction, skills she's maneuvered into multi-million YouTube and Spotify plays.
