Talk | Keep It Wild: Native Plants in the Park

Celebrate native plants in the park. This conversation, led by Director of Horticulture Richard Hayden, will offer a behind-the-scenes look at the wild-inspired gardens we see today. Horticulturalists aim to create sustainable, resilient, and pollinator-friendly landscapes—native plants are the cornerstone of these efforts. Taking inspiration from the self-seeded landscape of the once-derelict railway, “keep it wild” became one of the original design tenets when the park was transformed into public open space. Native plants fit into the local ecosystem better than traditional ornamentals, as they provide much-needed food sources and habitat for local butterflies, bees, and birds.

Lecture | The Transsexual Exception

McKenzie Wark will discuss "The Transsexual Exception." How does the phenomena of transsexuality trouble or modify existing social categories of analysis? Not surprisingly, transsexuality puts pressure on what we take sex or gender or sexuality to be. That is perhaps the place to start a trans critique of social science and social movements alike for which these are key terms. But we can look beyond that to less obvious interactions between transsexuality and social thought. How does it interact with, and even modify, understandings of race and class? And finally, what pressure does it put on the concepts of nature and techniques? This talk gives an overview of what a systematic critical inquiry from the trans point of view might yield, as well as making the case for the relevance of such a standpoint for both trans and cis scholars and activists alike.

Gallery Talk | Alchi: Visions of Enlightenment: Curatorial Tour

Jeff Watt, a leading scholar of Himalayan Art and founding curator at the Rubin Museum of Art, discusses the iconography in Peter Van Ham’s monumental photographs of Alchi Monastery.  The Alchi murals are a part of the main features of the cultural heritage of Ladakh, and the complex of monastic temples with breathtakingly preserved art from the 11th centuries have become a significant tourist destination. Combined with the brilliant colors and complex iconography dating  back to the 10th-11th centuries, the incredibly well preserved Alchi murals have become world famous for their exceedingly rich detail, bright colors, and exemplary execution, as well as their colorful historical documentation of the jataka tales (stories of the Buddha’s past lives), monumental mandalas and iconographic depictions of major Buddhist deities created by teams of master artisans. Choosing specific aspects of the exhibition, Watt will give a guided tour discussing the technical skill, taste, and finesse of the Alchi artists: the shading of a skin portion of a large figure, miniature-like attendants, the variant and multicolored outlines of a cloth design and its combination of colors, the elegant twist of energy rays emanating from a deity, the delicate line of attributes held by small depictions of Bodhisattvas in mandalas are painted (seemingly executed with single-haired brushes), the abundant jewelry, or the decorative elements such as volutes, borders, and floral structures.

Opening Reception | Haik Kocharian: Surfing Color

This show presents photographs that are abstract creations born from realism. Kocharian emphasizes the ambient color in the tradition of minimalism, observing the beauty and mystery of light, shadows, tone, and moods. The environments within the photographs are transformed into ones of symbolism, challenging the viewer to question the images. As a result, a tension is created, like an energy trapped in a frame attempting to escape.

Book Discussion | Ice: From Mixed Drinks to Skating Rinks—a Cool History of a Hot Commodity

The unexpected and unexplored ways that ice has transformed a nation—from the foods Americans eat, to the sports they play, to the way they live today—and what its future might look like on a swiftly warming planet. Ice is everywhere: in gas stations, in restaurants, in hospitals, in our homes. Americans think nothing of dropping a few ice cubes into tall glasses of tea to ward off the heat of a hot summer day. Most refrigerators owned by Americans feature automatic ice machines. Ice on-demand has so revolutionized modern life that it’s easy to forget that it wasn’t always this way—and to overlook what aspects of society might just melt away as the planet warms. Journalist and historian Amy Brady shares the strange and storied two-hundred-year-old history of ice in America: from the introduction of mixed drinks “on the rocks,” to the nation’s first-ever indoor ice rink, to how delicacies like ice creams and iced tea revolutionized our palates, to the ubiquitous ice machine in every motel across the US. But Ice doesn’t end in the past. Brady also explores the surprising present-day uses of ice in sports, medicine, and sustainable energy—including cutting-edge cryotherapy breast-cancer treatments and new refrigerator technologies that may prove to be more energy efficient—underscoring how precious this commodity is, especially in an age of climate change.

Classical Music | The Song of Dirt Stammers Our Tongue: A Radio Operetta

A radio operetta directed by its librettist Esther Sibiude, with music created and arranged in collaboration with an ensemble of five players: vocalist Lucia della Paolera, violist Justine Lugli, cellist Timothy Rusterholz, organist Thomas Hobson Williams playing the synthesizer, and Sibiude playing the harp. As in Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, each of the instruments in this new work illustrates a character or theme from the poetic text--a blade of grass, a second, a ray of sunshine, a leaf. Musical threads weave together the journey of a man who belongs to the night sky, but who falls to Earth one evening while asleep. Unfamiliar with life on this planet, and generally disoriented, his meanderings lead him to New York, where he has to adjust to the city's temporality. The piece will be semi-staged and performed live with musicians wearing costumes inspired by the natural world. The 40 minute medley of new compositions by the group set to original text by Sibiude merges improvisation with pop, folk, sacred and classical pieces. Production design by Esther Sibiude and Jett Strauss.
