Performance | Ties That Bond: Performance Art in the Park

Throughout their 40-year collaboration, Peter Cramer and Jack Waters have built a media-driven interdisciplinary practice that draws upon socio-political engagement with issues of sexual/gender identity and AIDS activism. Cramer and Waters have conceived a durational performance/installation in collaboration with members of their “queer-skinned kitchen band,” NYOBS, featuring John Michael Swartz and Mike Cacciatore. For several hours, the ensemble will weave a tapestry of ribbons, sound, movement, music, and text throughout the Memorial site, evoking the tradition of springtime maypole celebrations. Inspired by the 1960s-era “Happenings,” musical instruments and art materials will be provided to the general public to activate the site as part of the event. In the spirit of an urban homestead, all attendees are encouraged to get involved in building together.

Screening | Silent Clowns Film Showcase

Silent Clowns, New York’s longest-running silent film showcase, examines one of the most endearing (not to mention enduring) comedy series ever, Our Gang, which ran theatrically from 1922 to 1944, and then started a whole new lease on life as The Little Rascals on television in the 1950s. The catalyst for the series was Ernie Morrison, a talented child comedian who’s the subject of this tribute program. Special guest Ina Archer, artist and media conservator, joins to present Ernie and the Gang in new restorations of Fire Fighters (1922), The Champeen (1923) and Dogs of War (1923). The Silent Clowns film series reaches the serious film buff by including rarely-screened titles and rare prints, yet it also introduces kids and new audiences to the classics of the silent screen. Screenings feature live piano accompaniment by MoMA’s Ben Model, with an introduction and Q&A by film historians Model and Steve Massa. Registration required.
