From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Concert | Gaetano, Soul Singer-Songwriter

Gaetano brings a unique blend of raw talent and passion for music. Gaetano has produced records for some of the biggest names in urban music; Fat Joe, Shaggy, Ryan Leslie, Bobby V, and Jack Thriller, to name a few. Says he, “World music has been my primary influence. When I was a kid, I’d listen to the Italian classics. You know, those old-school Napolitano songs with tons of heartache and pain behind them. Most of that music is written in a minor key, specifically A minor and D minor; two great keys for learning soul music.” Following that, Gaetano acquired deeper influence from the all-time greats. Andrea Bocelli, Carlos Santana, Bob Marley – to Michael Jackson, D’Angelo, Stevie Wonder, Babyface, Usher, and Pharrell. In an era of music that relies heavily on auto-tune and other tricks, Gaetano strips it down to the essentials. He showcases a soulful tone, stellar falsetto, and gorgeous electric guitar solos in his music. It’s the raw authenticity behind his approach that fans really connect with. Gaetano released his debut EP “Fade Away,” featuring production from Grammy Award Winning producer/songwriter Kaleb “K Quick” Rollins. The project also includes self-produced/written tracks from Gaetano. There’s a soulful and honest vibe carried throughout the entire album, and anyone who’s been on either side of love can relate and understand where Gaetano is coming from in his music. His sophomore EP “Acoustix,” was released in October 2015. This acoustic, duet-influenced project is quint-essential Gaetano at its finest. Listeners can anticipate a swooning falsetto, beautiful harmonies, melodic guitar solos, and overall a well-produced piece of authentic music that comes from the soul. Concert | Fête de la Musique: Wax Tailor / Her / Ayo / Ala.Ni

An evening of French contemporary talent and genres ranging from hip-hop to soul and pop It’s rare to meet a turntablist DJ who so values the sound and aesthetic of classic-era Hollywood. A favorite in his home country of France (and, frankly, all over Europe), Wax Tailor’s decidedly cool, anachronistic mixing of long-lost soundtracks of the silver screen and current hip-hop and Euro-synth beats is unlike that of any DJ working today. When two male performers out of the French Scene decided to name their band Her, they knew they’d turn a few inquisitive heads. A tribute to the women who have inspired and shaped them, and a commentary on the nature of duality, the band’s name sums up their sensibilities and philosophies on art, as well as life. The German-born singer/songwriter/actress Joy Olasunmibo Ogunmakin -- Ayo -- has a lineage as remarkably unique as her sound. With a Nigerian father and Romanian mother, she grew up in Africa and Europe, and was already learning to play the piano, violin and guitar at the age of six. Her stage name is the Yoruba translation of the word for “joy,” her first name, and this adjective couldn’t be more applicable for describing her music. British-born, Paris-based vocalist Ala.Ni defies categorization. Each song on her debut You & I sounds like a forgotten gem – instantly familiar but eerily difficult to pin down. All of her songs are highly original, written and produced by the artist, and have a haunting David Lynch-ian quality to them.
