Tour | Williamsburg Street Art Tour

Street art is visual art created in public locations, usually unsanctioned artwork executed outside of the context of traditional art venues. The term gained popularity during the graffiti art boom of the early 1980s and continues to be applied to subsequent incarnations. Stencil graffiti, wheat pasted poster art or sticker art, and street installation or sculpture are common forms of modern street art. Video projection, yarn bombing and Lock Onsculpture became popularized at the turn of the 21st century. The terms "urban art," "guerrilla art," "post-graffiti" and "neo-graffiti" are also sometimes used when referring to artwork created in these contexts.

Concert | Bobby Rush, Folk-Funk Fusion Singer

Born in Louisiana, singer Bobby Rush started out as a bluesman on Chicago’s West Side before transitioning to clubs that better accommodated his increasingly bawdy style, captured in songs like “Bowlegged Woman, Knock-Kneed Man” and “Chicken Heads.” Drawing from a long tradition of jesting, signifying, and onstage theatrics, the Chitlin’ Circuit veteran returns to perform his trademark Southern-fried folk-funk fusion, oozing pure R&B spectacle.

Tour | Veggies with a View: Rooftop Garden Tour

Perched high atop the 41st floor overlooking Manhattan, a rooftop vegetable garden has been cultivated. Now growing for its third year, the organic garden illustrates a foray into urban agriculture, producing vegetables and herbs that are used throughout the hotel’s food and beverage program. The 1,344-square foot garden is situated 384 feet above Manhattan. With eleven planted beds and four robust barrels planted throughout summer and fall, vegetables include arugula, mesclun lettuces, heirloom tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, peppers and fall squashes. Herbs include basil, mint, thyme, oregano and cilantro. The garden utilizes only organic plants, soil, fertilizer and insect deterrents, including eco-friendly ladybugs. Led by Executive Chef and Chief Gardener Brian Wieler, the tours offer insider access to the private garden, which has breathtaking views of Manhattan and is closed to the public. During the tour, Chef Wieler discusses the hotel’s culinary and rooftop garden program, with a Q and A session and special surprises afterwards.

Other | Artist Shannon Ebner with David Reinfurt present A Hudson Yard

Los Angeles-based artist Shannon Ebner is known for black and white photographs for which she embeds text sculptures in the American landscape, offering a consideration of the powerful sculptural qualities of language. Working also with typography and commercial signage, the artist explores the limitations of language in order to show the architectural elements of communication. Her language-based sculptures illustrate the physical construction of letters through their repeated formal qualities, allowing Ebner to focus on the structure and syntax of linguistic communication. For this commission, Ebner presented, in collaboration with David Reinfurt, A HUDSON YARD, a series of twelve wheat-pasted posters at various locations around the High Line in Chelsea and the Meatpacking District. Each poster featured a photograph of a capital letter “A” as found in different settings – an advertisement on the side of a building, a logo on the awning of a shoe shop, a municipal mural under an overgrown plant on a city wall.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Conor McGrady: Intrusion

Intrusion features McGrady's recent conceptual drawings of architectural structures. McGrady's fortified enclosures remind us of industrial and institutional building, especially those run by the state. While his visual vocabulary is aligned with modernism i.e. Bauhaus, Constructivism, and Minimalism, his color palette is limited to black, white, and different shades of gray. The black and white building planes might represent the irony of architecture - protection and security versus containment and control - whereas the tube-like gray borders can be interpreted as representing the ambiguous status and quality of the structures' foundations in light of social progress.

Opening Reception | Exhibition: Montserrat Daubon's Quiet Storm: Landscapes on Paper

Montserrat Daubon's landscape paintings are distillations of feeling and place. Presenting mostly all work on paper, this show is an exploration of plein-air work and how it fuels studio invention. The on site work is oil on paper. The larger works are large format watercolor executed on a wall and on the floor by throwing, splashing and dripping paint. Montserrat is attracted to watercolor because of its immediacy and transparency. Every stroke of energy, intention and accident is recorded. The goal is to layer these recordings while building up pigment to create an emotional image of what a place feels like.

Opening Reception | Mixed Media Works: Stephanie Hirsch's Awakening

Continuing her use of beads, sequins and embroidery to create canvases that echo her personal journeys, Stephanie Hirsch has delivered her most resolute exhibition to date. "Awakening" is Hirsch's third solo exhibition with the gallery and clearly one that has synthesized elements from her earlier shows. Awakening also introduces a new element in her art-making trek, the shaped canvas. "Awakening" exclusively uses the shape of the butterfly and Hirsch clearly utilizes the butterfly to metaphorically represent a personal transformation.
