Opening Reception | Nadia Khawaja's Drawings - Videos - Photographs

The first US solo exhibition of Lahore-based Nadia Khawaja, whose work was first seen in the gallery as part of New Art from Pakistan, Jan-Feb, 2010. Contrary to the miniature based, politically slanted figuration usually associated with contemporary Pakistani art, Khawaja has developed a personal, abstract vocabulary in drawing, while finding physical world equivalents to her concepts in photography and video. Displayed side by side, the different works attest to the artist’s interest in relationships between control and surrender, rationality and spirituality, and presence and timelessness.

Opening Reception | Painting & Drawing: Loretta Mae Hirsch's Infinite Desires

An exhibition of new paintings and drawings by southern gothic artist Loretta Mae Hirsch. It includes Hirsch’s large-scale “Bound” nude self-portraits, a series of oil-on-canvas paintings that show the artist in varying stages of physical arrest, restrained by strands of sinuous ribbon that increase with each portrait. Loretta Mae Hirsch was born in Oklahoma in 1979. She studied abroad at the Glasgow School of Art, and at the Atlanta College of Art, where she earned her BFA in 2001. Since such time, Hirsch has participated in over 30 group exhibitions in Atlanta and New York City. Most recently, she earned her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Infinite Desire is her first solo exhibition with Hionas Gallery and her second solo show since moving to New York in 2006.

Opening Reception | Painting: Anina Gerchick's Thresholds and Guardians

Drawing from influences ranging from the art of the beautiful grotesque to Yogic philosophy and practice, these newest works present volatile landscapes attended by mythic escorts. Water, the key element, cycles through its three physical states, ignoring human expectation. Disparate elements of Seuss-like structures are combined with fractal patterning in icebergs, skies, and streams. Gerchick creates dialogues between the bizarre and the natural by painting symmetries, hybrids and contrasts. Her work combines tradition with experimentation to create new forms, incorporating a deep foundation in classical painting and the medium's material physicality, while employing a contemporary vocabulary that reflects the precarious balance of the natural environment.

Performance | Almost Former Reality TV Stars

Once upon a time, Corinne Fisher and Thomas Whitfield were cast on a reality TV show (no, seriously, this happened). This was their big break and they were finally going to be famous! They were going to be partying with Ke$ha! They were going to be snorting huge balls of cocaine and tweeting to millions of followers! They were going to be able to shoplift -- legally! Unfortunately, forty-two days after signing their contracts, they were fired (this also happened). WOMP WOMP. It's ok. Don't feel sorry for them. They already feel ridiculously sorry for themselves. So sorry, in fact, that they created an entire show about the show...the show they were fired from. They were fired. Did you catch that? Oh, and they hired a drag queen to help tell the story. Is that ok with you, Sundance Channel? THEY DON'T CARE...YOU'RE NOT THE BOSS OF THEM (anymore)!
