Museums | Tiffany Glass and Other Exhibitions

The collection of Tiffany's leaded glass includes an extraordinary array of floral and geometric lamps as well as landscape and figural windows. A unique feature of the collection is a vast, one-of-a-kind archive of original flat glass and pressed-glass "jewels" used by Tiffany Studios, which provides valuable insight into the development of the stained-glass movement in America at the turn of the twentieth century. Established in 1972, this art museum's permanent collection consists of around 10,000 items, over 6,000 of which are documents and objects related to the 1939 and 1964 World's Fairs, some of which are on long-term display.

Opening Reception | Bruce Sargeant (1898-1938): Sports and Leisure

In 2004, scholar Gary Haller, writing about Bruce Sargeant (now commonly known as artist Mark Beard’s most popular alter ego), observed: “Bruce Sargeant is a mythic figure in the modern art movement. He embodies a world that is in many ways lost to us; he exudes a sensibility that fills every corner of his canvas; the heaviness of his figures hides an elusive levity. . . In the stock-still gaze of his athletes, in the subdued intensity of his still lifes, in the reflective sheen on his three-dimensional work, it is clear that he goes beyond reality. . . If you look closely in the eyes of his subjects, they seem beyond the world of the viewer. They simply cannot exist—nor can the artist who created them. Sargeant is at the height of his powers when he achieves this superficiality—in the pure sense of what lies on surfaces—an analogue for the sublime.”

Workshop | A Deeper Listen: Meditation and Music

Sink into a different kind of sound bath after work with guided meditation and live chamber music that will send out into the evening refreshed and recentered. The hourlong program begins with a short mindfulness practice led by former New York Times contributing music critic Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, founder of Beginner's Ear. Out of the collective stillness the mesmerizing sounds of classical flute and harp unfold, leading participants to a place of deep calm. Two rising stars, Grammy-nominated flutist Brandon Patrick George and acclaimed harpist Parker Ramsay will weave a unique sonic journey out of selections by Claude Debussy, Toru Takemitsu, Johann Sebastian Bach and others. A short Q&A on mindful listening with musicians and listeners wraps up the event.

Classical Music | Grammy Award-Winning String Quartet

The Grammy Award-winning Attacca Quartet has been described as "close to epitomizing the string quartet ideal: four strikingly individual players with the ability to speak eloquently in one voice" by The Washington Post, and as "one of the most versatile and outstanding ensembles of the moment--a quartet for modern times" by The Nation. In this performance, the quartet responds to a public art installation in the park by Cristina Iglesias--her first temporary project in the United States--which situates five bronze sculptural pools within the park to conjure the memory of an ancient stream that once flowed through the site.

Book Discussion | Other People’s Colleges: The Origins of American Higher Education Reform (online)

Ethan Ris's book is an illuminating history of the reform agenda in higher education. For well over one hundred years, people have been attempting to make American colleges and universities more efficient and more accountable. Indeed, Ris argues the reform impulse is baked into American higher education, the result of generations of elite reformers who have called for sweeping changes in the sector and raised existential questions about its sustainability. When that reform is beneficial, offering major rewards for minor changes, colleges and universities know how to assimilate it. When it is hostile, attacking autonomy or values, they know how to resist it. The result is a sector that has learned to accept top-down reform as part of its existence.

Concert | K-Indie Music Night

The undeniable chart-topping popularity of K-Pop has raised Korea to the heights of global creative influence, but that's not all Korea has to offer! The country's thriving independent rock scene offers a nuanced counterpart to K-pop's glossier production. K-Indie’s diverse expression of sound - from guitar-driven, underground post-rock to mellow, lo-fi electronics - mark it as the likely next big thing in Korea's role as a cultural exporter.  This show spotlights two of the genre's best bands: Jannabi, who specialize in lyrically wistful, vintage-pop artistry and the more new wave-inspired, three-piece modern rock collective byebyesea.
