Classical Music | Bach at Noon

The organ works of J.S. Bach (1685-1750) offered in 30-minute meditations. Johann Sebastian Bach was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations as well as for vocal music such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. "The term 'baroque' has been widely used since the 19th century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750... Many famous composers from the first part of the baroque period came from Italy and have a link with Venice, including Claudio Monteverdi and Antonio Vivaldi. Monteverdi was born in Cremona, but moved to Venice where he was 'maestro di capella' at the San Marco basilica. Vivaldi was born in Venice and was one of the greatest baroque composers. It is thanks to these strong musical traditions of Venice that we have today's music. Without Venetian church music and Monteverdi's advances with polyphony, the great traditions of choral music in England, France, and Germany would never have developed. Without the operas written by Monteverdi, Cavalli and Vivaldi, not only would the later styles of opera never have been invented. There would be no basis for the American Musical or the German and Viennese Operetta, the Spanish Zarzuela, and even rock, pop, and contemporary music as we know it." The Venice Insider Bach at Noon concerts take place every Tuesdays through Fridays, from September 10, 2019 to May 20, 2020.

Welcome the New Year with the latest edition of the signature Full Moon Show, a manic, mysterious blend of mayhem and madness in the spirit of Tom Murrin, aka the Alien Comic. Artist and performer John Pizza calls this latest iteration My Shell, which is all about the shining armored shells we sport when clanking our way through everyday life. As always, there’s gonna be a little dancing, a little singing, and a surprising gathering of absurd objects. John Pizza is a performer, builder, and artist. He uses trash and thrift-store detritus scrounged in his Brooklyn neighborhood to tell stories and make shows. He loves the macabre and the mushy sweet. His sculptures are performative, and his performances involve sculptures—an object theatre of weird surprises.

Opening Reception | Tensions: Memories of Hate

Tensions is Quay Quinn Wolf’s second solo show and fifth presentation with the gallery. On June 25th, 2018 at 11:53 PM, a car at an intersection in downtown Brooklyn struck Quay Quinn Wolf and his partner. The resulting bodily injuries were minor; they were dismissed from the hospital with only small cuts and bruises, yet the psychological impact of the incident proved to be far greater. The incident is classified as a hate crime. The couple was intentionally struck with the driver speeding off after the incident. Wolf recalls the driver making eye contact with him prior to the hit then laughing after the impact was made. To this date, there has been no legal remedy or resolution with the perpetrator having never been found. The memory of this night is the source of Tensions, and the resulting body of work, through its exploration of materials and their juxtaposition, examines the layered interpretation of the crime.

Concert | Aura Blackstar: Bowie Cello Symphonic Visualized

Radical cellist Maya Beiser will debut her immersive performance of Aura Blackstar: Bowie Cello Symphonic Visualized in New York City. The event is a live presentation of Beiser’s forthcoming Bowie Cello Symphonic: Blackstar (Islandia Music Records), a dramatic track-by-track reimagining of David Bowie’s final album. The album release and performance will take place on January 10 to honor David Bowie’s passing on the same date, four years ago. Aura Blackstar: Bowie Cello Symphonic Visualized is an immersive concert and visual experience created especially for Beiser, featuring animated projections that flood the floor around her and directly onto her cello, reacting in real time to the sound emanating from Beiser’s cello and the orchestral tracks she’s performing to. New technology was created for the performance, using virtual reality spatial sensors and a software mapping system that “sticks” the imagery onto Beiser’s cello even as it moves.
