Classical Music | Chinese and Ottoman music


In a program featuring medieval recorder, kugo harp, oud and percussion, the Eurasia Consort explores Chinese and Ottoman music. What features linked the twain? The audience can decide. About the ensemble Formed in 2013 by August Denhard and Tomoko Sugawara, the Eurasia Consort has performed annual concerts in Seattle and New York with leading musicians dedicated to the ancient music of Europe, the Middle East, China, and Japan. Past performances have taken place at Trinity Parish Church, the Edmonds Library, and the Gig Harbor History Museum in Pacific Northwest; and the Rubin Museum, Tenri Institute, and Gotham Early Music Midtown Concerts in the Chapel at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York, to name a few. A selection of portraits of older transgender people by Jess Dugan. Jess Dugan (b. 1986 Biloxi, MS) is an artist whose work explores issues of identity, gender, sexuality, and community. She received her MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (2014), her Master of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from Harvard University (2010), and her BFA in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design (2007). Dugan has exhibited at venues including the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Aperture Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College, the Catherine Edelman Gallery, The Transformer Station, and at many colleges and universities throughout the United States.

Jazz | Etienne Charles, Renowned Trumpeter: Signature Creole Soul


Hailed by The New York Times as "an auteur" and by JazzTimes as a "daring improviser who delivers with heart wrenching lyricism,” Trinidad-born trumpet player, percussionist, and composer Etienne Charles has earned a reputation for blending the myriad rhythms and sounds of the Caribbean and American South (especially New Orleans jazz) into his signature style of Creole soul. A Juilliard grad and a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow, Charles is a member of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Swing Collective. His forthcoming album, Carnival: The Sound of a People Vol. 1, is an excursion into the varied acoustic sounds, grooves, chants, and rituals of Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. For this special evening, Charles will premiere a commissioned work inspired by the diverse immigrant experiences of the Americas.
