Author Reading | Norm Champ discusses his book Going Public: My Adventures Inside the SEC and How to Prevent the Next Devastating Crisis

Going Public chronicles former SEC official Norm Champ’s experiences at the agency and how they shed light on the regulatory process and government policy-making. When Champ joined the SEC in 2009, the agency was under immense pressure to reign in Wall Street. There was little doubt the SEC had to fix rules that permitted bad behavior and start to enforce existing laws. Champ was eager to be a part of this positive change. He soon realized, however, that not everyone shared his enthusiasm for ushering in reform. Going Public offers a behind-the-scenes look at the SEC's arcane culture and Champ's efforts to lead reforms to stabilize an American financial system that was on the brink of disaster. Feel free to bring your lunch.

Opening Reception | Seeing Through/Vedere Attraverso: Works by Antonio Scaccabarozzi and Marthe Keller

Antonio Scaccabarozzi (Merate, Italy 1936-2008) and Marthe Keller (b. New York, 1948) belong to different artistic generations, had different cultural upbringings, lived on different continents, (although Keller has been present in Europe, and particularly in Italy, for a long time), and experimented with different styles. If we systematically compare their works, however, the two painters seem to move from similar visual problems, and suggest answers that unexpectedly relate to each other. Both artists base the perceptual dynamics of their works on the experience of seeing through.

Opening Reception | Paintings: Harvey Quaytman's Hone

An exhibition of paintings from this crucial figure of late-era American abstraction. Harvey Quaytman came of age in the 70s and 80s when the art world was focused on Neo-Expressionism, Minimalism, Conceptualism and the Pictures Generation. Counter to these movements, Quaytman's work developed in response to Abstract Expressionism in an attempt to develop a more personal approach to abstraction. Hone features nine paintings made between 1982 and 1990, a period in which the artist favored paintings with a palette of white, black, blues, yellows, vermillion, and rust which, at times, were incorporated with crushed glass. Predicating his use of color on the basis of attraction, Quaytman noted, “I have no specific meanings, but a color must mean something to me before I use it. I must love that color and it must strike me.” Harvey Quaytman (1937-2002) is best known for his large scale, hard-edged modernist paintings. Originally steeped in the vernacular of 60s American abstraction reminiscent of Arshile Gorky and Willem de Kooning, Quaytman found his distinctive style of abstraction in the 70s by creating unconventionally shaped paintings dominated by one or two colors. Hone features work from the 80s when the artist began a new chapter working within a rectangular format distinguished by bold, assertive colors. A rich palette dominates his paintings of this period, often with a cruciform as the central compositional anchor, a form that he later isolated evoking painting as object.

Opening Reception | Photography: Marco Scozzaro's Digital Deli

In his exhibition, Scozzaro employs a photographic fiction-‐making process as obliquely autobiographical, fabricating, inventing, and constructing images that straddle both criticism and confession. Subverting a tantalizing advertising style of rich colors and textures with staged images that disorient, Scozzaro questions the representability of certain ideas that recur in mass media.

Poetry Reading | A Tribute to American Poet C.K. Williams, who won nearly every major poetry award

A reading to celebrate the late poet C.K. Williams (1936 - 2015), who won nearly every major poetry award. The reading features Jonathan Galassi, Edward Hirsh, Yusef Komunyakaa, Paul Muldoon, James Richardson, Alan Shapiro, Chase Twichell, Susan Wheeler, and Adam Zagajewski. Mr. Williams first made his mark in the late 1960s with short poems that addressed, in quick, jolting lines, the torments of love and politics. His verse could be, by turns, intensely personal, or public-spirited, taking on the Vietnam War and a long list of social injustices, expressed in hot language. “This is fresh meat right mr nixon?” begins one of his best-known poems, “In the Heart of the Beast,” a response to the fatal shootings of student demonstrators at Kent State University in 1970.

Lecture | Burning Issues in African Philosophy

Burning Issues in African Philosophy builds off the sophisticated work that has now become part of an international conversation on how African philosophy makes unique interventions into almost every important question of politics, ethics, aesthetics, ontology and epistemology. Indeed, the very definition of these fundamental philosophical conceptions is both challenged and enriched. In this way, African philosophy is not only crucial in understanding what constitutes its uniqueness but also in providing us with new and innovative ways to think about some of the most burning issues of our time as far reaching as what is the meaning of being human to how we can effectively challenge climate change.
