Forum | Brushes with the Law: Young New Yorkers, Neighborhoods and the Criminal Justice System

The city has overhauled its juvenile justice system to keep more young people out of confinement and in their communities. In the process, officials, organizers and providers also aim to strengthen families and neighborhoods. How can city government engage communities and tap into the strengths of local groups that work with teens and families? Will community organizations find resources to participate? And how can families and residents hold the juvenile justice system accountable so that it does not repeat old mistakes? A conversation with: Vincent N. Schiraldi, commissioner, NYC Department of Probation Ronald E. Richter, commissioner, NYC Administration for Children’s Services Ruben Austria, founder and executive director, Community Connections for Youth Sharieff Clayton, program coordinator, CASES Jaime T. Koppel, director of youth and education justice, Children's Defense Fund-New York Cynthia Armijo, executive director, Boys Town New York Moderated by Andrew White, director, Center for New York City Affairs

Lecture | Plagues and Poxes: Epidemic Disease in Medieval and Early Modern London

Epidemic disease has long been fundamental to the profile of the European Middle Ages - from the spread of leprosy in the twelfth century to the catastrophic pandemics of the fourteenth. However, the writers and artists of the time are surprisingly reticent on the subject of disease. Geoffrey Chaucer and his contemporaries have little to say about the plague. Even when it provides occasion and context for their work they eschew details of bodily disintegration. Speaker Sealy Gilles, a writer in residence in the Library's Wertheim Study, is Associate Professor of English at Long Island University - Brooklyn.

Lecture | Experience and The Republic: Emerson, Plato, Heidegger, Cavell

With Russell Goodman. At the center of Emerson’s essay “Experience” stands a scene of instruction in which the writer is “apprised of [his] vicinity to a new and excellent region of life,” a region that is that is at once indescribable and the subject of a series of traditional and invented names: the “vast flowing vigor” of Mencius, the Nous of Anaxagoras, the fire of Zoroaster, the love of Jesus, “the sunbright Mecca of the desert,” and “this new yet unapproachable America.” This central source appears in many of Emerson’s essays—for example as the “One” in “Self-Reliance” or as the “over-soul” in the essay of that title, and it marks what is widely recognized as a Platonic and Neoplatonic element in Emerson’s thought. It is not hard to see the “sunbright” scene that Emerson portrays as a variation of the central sun in the myth of the cave, the source of being and knowledge that Plato calls the Good; and the dark opening of “Experience” as a representation of the interior of the cave, a scene not of insight but of confusion. Does Emerson embark on a Platonic journey in “Experience” in which the aim is to free oneself from the cave and its obscurities and confusions; or is it a romantic journey as understood by critics from M. H. Abrams to Stanley Cavell, a quest for the ordinary, the miraculous in the common? And what is the shape of this journey?

Lecture | Le Corbusier: The Writings of an Architect

On his French identity card, legendary architect Le Corbusier listed his profession as "Homme de Lettres" (Man of Letters). Celebrated for his architecture, which numbers fewer than sixty buildings, Le Corbusier also wrote more than fifty books, hundreds of articles, and thousands of letters. Author M. Christine Boyer focuses on the development of his writing style as it morphed from romantic prose to aphorisms and telegraphic bulletins. For each of his books, Le Corbusier was meticulous about the design of the page layout, the form of the type, the impact of the ideas, and even the promotional material. As a man of letters, Le Corbusier expected to contribute to the cultural atmosphere of the twentieth century.

Concert | Music from Poland: Polesye Project / Shofar Trio

Singer, accordionist, musicologist and Warsaw-native Olga Mieleszczuk’s (Polesye Project) special focus is music of the Ashkenazi Jewish tradition of Eastern Europe, especially the border areas of Poland (Galitzia, Polesye). A classically-trained musician, who divides her time between Warsaw and Tel Aviv, she has studied and performed wide-ranging genres from Hassidic music, to Yiddish songs, to folk music from the Jewish, Slavic and Balkan traditions. Shofar Trio—guitarist Raphael Roginski, saxophonist and bass clarinet player Mikolaj Trzaska and drummer Macio Moretti—formed in 2006, joins traditional Jewish music with contemporary avant-jazz and rock. The Poland-based band released its debut album album in 2007—works based on the first compendium of Hassidic melodies from the Ukraine, Poland and Moldova compiled by early 20th-century Soviet musicologist Moshe Beregovsky. Over the past five years, the group has performed throughout Europe. The concert will feature the trio’s innovative interpretations of nigunim, or religious songs (meant to induce a state of religious ecstasy), more dancelike freylakhs, and Jewish liturgical music.
