Discussion | Is America Becoming Ungovernable?

The U.S. government is running out of money – fast. While the country braces for a political showdown in February over increasing the debt limit, some speculate that political polarization is making the United States ungovernable. Debates about the budget, taxes, social programs, and government spending are fundamental to our future. But these issues are increasingly lost in Washington’s prolonged and bitter fighting. This panel of experts on economics and politics will discuss the past, present and future of political dysfunction from a perspective that is outside the mainstream debate of cuts vs. spending. They will explore the historical and structural causes that brought us here and offer new ideas for moving the country forward to overcome polarization on our key economic issues, including inequality, proper support for the elderly, and fair taxation.

Screening | Oscar-Nominated Documentary: David France's How to Survive a Plague (2012)

In the dark days of 1987, the country was six years into the AIDS epidemic, a crisis that was still largely being ignored both by government officials and health organizations - until the sudden emergence of the activist group ACT UP in Greenwich Village, largely made up of HIV-positive participants who refused to die without a fight. Emboldened by the power of rebellion, they took on the challenges that public officials had ignored, raising awareness of the disease through a series of dramatic protests. 120 min.

Jazz | The Hot Sardines

The Wall Street Journal calls the Hot Sardines' sound “high-energy traditional jazz with a Parisian accent.” The collective – founded by vocalist “Miz” Elizabeth Bougerol and pianist Evan “Bibs” Palazzo – makes music evoking wartime Paris via New Orleans, or the other way around: hot jazz, salty stride piano, and the kind of music Louis Armstrong and Fats Waller used to make: Straight-up, foot-stomping jazz. (Literally – the band includes a tap dancer whose feet count as two members of the rhythm section). Show times: 7:30pm and 9:30pm.
