Brooke Kroeger (Professor, Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute) speaks on her latest book and its companion database, which chronicles undercover journalism dating back to the 1800s. Kroeger posits that this type of journalism is not separate from the profession’s conventional practices but, rather, embodies some of its most important tenets—the ability to extract significant information or to create indelible, real-time descriptions of hard-to-penetrate institutions or social situations that deserve the public’s attention. A reception will follow.

Opening Reception | Paintings by Paul Pretzer

Paul Pretzer's images are interconnected with one another in subtle narrative strings and become something larger; a psychological rebus. A Pretzer painting contains humor and aversion. Its bizarre configurations evoke association and abstraction at once. Centrally fusing monkeys with eminent portrayals, the artist continuously sources the uncanny while pushing the boundaries of contemporary painting further. His work is always immediately recognizable. It is rude and irreverent, playful and beautiful.

Lecture | Blink and Burn: Cinema, Materiality, and the China Girl

With Genevieve Yue. The 'China girl', sometimes called a 'China doll' or 'girl head', has appeared in more films than any actress, though these women are almost never seen, save for a fleeting glimpse an audience might catch at the end of a film reel. Since the late 1920s, China girls — women posed demurely next to color swatches — have appeared on the leader of every commercial manufactured film. While they are instrumental in determining exposure, image density, and color balance in film print stocks, their images have lingered in production facilities despite the contemporary use of digital technologies that otherwise render them obsolete. This presentation addresses the China girl's appearance in two registers: as an image both central to, and invisible within, the history of industrial film production, and as a subject recuperated by a number of avant-garde films and digital works. It argues that in both industrial and experimental contexts, the China girl expresses an enduring association between filmic materiality and femininity that, in a predominantly digital production context, persists despite the newer technologies' connotations of objectivity and accuracy, and their supposed immateriality.

Lecture | Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Judy Collins and more

Words and music of the Civil War era will fill the site of Lincoln’s 1860 “Right Makes Might” speech, in a celebration of the birthday of our 16th president, starring Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Judy Collins and featuring Tony Award-nominated and film actor Stephen Lang (Avatar, The Speed of Darkness, Gettysburg, Gods and Generals), Tony and Obie Award-winning actor/singer André De Shields (The Wiz, The Full Monty), pop folk singer/songwriter Dar Williams, members of The Classical Theater Of Harlem and nationally renowned Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer. Collins will perform popular songs of the era, including some of Lincoln’s favorites: Beautiful Dreamer, Johnny I Hardly Knew You and The Last Rose of Summer, as well as composer Aaron Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, featuring excerpts from Lincoln’s great documents including the Gettysburg Address. Williams will sing, as well. Lang and De Shields return to reprise their roles as Lincoln and abolitionist Frederick Douglass, respectively, and engage in a riveting dialogue constructed from historical documents, personal letters and speeches. Holzer, chairman of the national Lincoln Bicentennial Foundation and a consultant on Steven Spielberg’s 2012 film, Lincoln, compiled the dialogue and will serve as master of ceremonies.
