Slide Lecture | A Culinary History of Jews in America Based on the Astrological Signs of the Delicatessen

With Seth Front, a screenwriter, comedy writer and entrepreneur, who uses humor to emotionally connect with his audience. This multimedia presentation is a humorous and heartwarming history of four generations of American Jews, from 1890 to the present, which uses the metaphor of the deli (and its history) to describe the changes: from arrival to adaptation, then assimilation to rediscovery of roots. The interactive lecture uses over one hundred images to tell the history of the Jewish deli in America, from its origins on the Lower East Side at the turn of the 20th century, its adaptation to American tastes, its assimilation into mainstream American culture and finally to the challenges facing delis for survival in the 21st century.

Lecture | Subjective Histories of Sculpture: Agneiwszka Kurant

The artist-led lecture series Subjective Histories of Sculpture explores how contemporary artists think about sculpture, its history, legacies, and potential for innovation. Agneiszka Kurant’s practice can be categorized under a conceptual aesthetic, investigating both visible and imagined dualities that have influenced social, economic and political systems of the contemporary world. She often engages in collaboration with professionals or experts in diverse disciplines—often scientists, inventors, or journalists-and seeks to explore gaps in logic that confuse and inform our understanding of real and fictitious realities.

Reading | Swoon!: The Recital

Back in the day, people used to have to memorize texts for school, to keep a few lines of prose or poetry in their hearts at all times, easily accessible in any situation. This practice has mostly gone to the wayside--no longer do whole classrooms of miserable schoolchildren have to recite "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by heart--but it begs the question: what text would you choose to burn into your brain if you could choose anything at all? The Recital is a new literary series where we want you to answer that question. Writers and performers will each recite a 1–3 minute piece of their choice. The only real rule is that the memorized text cannot be their own; otherwise, anything goes. Hosted by Rachel Syme and Maris Kreizman.

Even with a scientific upbringing, Balog had been a skeptic about climate change. But that first trip north opened his eyes to the biggest story in human history and sparked a challenge within him that would put his career and his very well-being at risk. 76 min.
