City Walk | Lower East Side Food Tour

Where can you find a historic Synagogue next to a storefront Buddhist Temple, trendy boutiques that sit comfortably beside decades-old "Mom and Pop" shops, or tenament apartments interspersed between luxury high rise condos? Look no further than the Lower East Side to discover America's great Melting Pot. Once an insular slum with the one of the world's highest population densities and lowest life expectancies, its streets tell the tales of immigrant struggles and rags to riches stories. Known for a time as Kleindeutschland (Little Germany), this neighboorhood was also the Jewish ward, home today to a mix of foreign-born Latinos and Asians as well as students and hipsters. The result is one of New York City's most dynamic and interesting neighborhoods and a food lover's paradise.

Lecture | Beyond Violence: A Comparative Analysis of Hannah Arendt and Mahatma Gandhi

With Ramin Jahanbegloo. When considering the subject of nonviolence, the name of Hannah Arendt may not quickly spring to mind. Despite her vigorous advocacy of participatory politics and her famous critique of the totalitarian system, Arendt rarely addressed directly the philosophy of nonviolence, except occasionally to discuss the issues of power and violence. However, though she dismisses nonviolence as a way of moralizing politics, she perceives it as a tool in the process of constituting or perpetuating freedom in the public sphere. As for Gandhi, the major shift in focus that appears in his political theory is from the everlasting idea of deriving political decision from the primacy of the political to an idea of the primacy of the ethical. Gandhi’s critique of modern politics leads him to a concept of the political which finds its expression in an “ethics of togetherness” which is framed in terms of a dialogue between ethics and politics.

Opening Reception | Rutherford Chang's We Buy White Albums, an “Anti-Store” of the Beatles' Iconic Double Album

Rutherford Chang will begin work on We Buy White Albums. Pursuing an interest in exhaustive cataloguing, Chang has collected over 650 first-pressings of the Beatles’ White Album. He considers the serialized first-press, an edition running in excess of 3 million, to be the ultimate collector’s item, and aims to amass as many copies as possible. Chang will create an archive, listening library, and anti-store to house and grow his collection of the Beatles’ iconic record. Chang will create a record store that stocks only White Albums. But rather than selling the albums, he will buy more from anyone willing to part with an original pressing in any condition. Visitors will be invited to browse the collection and listen to the records. The artist will digitally record every album played during the Session period, as well as document each gatefold cover and disc label. At the end of the Session, Chang will press a new double-LP made of the accumulated recordings and images layered upon each other. The album covers are weathered, often with marks or writing from previous owners, and the vinyl discs are usually scratched or warped. The character of each copy, distinctly shaped by its history, is told through the physicality of the media. This phenomenon, at the cusp of extinction due to digital technologies, is made apparent by the identical yet unique multiples that comprise Chang’s collection.

Author Reading | Robert S. Litwak discusses his book Outlier States: American Strategies to Change, Contain, or Engage Regimes

This lecture examines the role of the United States as an enforcer against the development of nuclear weapons in the international community. In the Bush era Iran and North Korea were branded "rogue" states for their flouting of international norms, and changing their regimes was the administration's goal. The Obama administration has chosen instead to call the countries nuclear "outliers" and has proposed means other than regime change to bring them back into "the community of nations." The successor to his influential Regime Change: U.S. Strategy through the Prism of 9/11 (2007), the author explores this significant policy adjustment and raises questions about its feasibility and its possible consequences.

Talk | Anka Muhlstein discusses her book Monsieur Proust's Library

Reading was so important to Marcel Proust that it sometimes seems he was unable to create a personage without a book in hand. Everybody in his work reads: servants and masters, children and parents, artists and physicians. The more sophisticated characters find it natural to speak in quotations. Proust made literary taste a means of defining personalities and gave literature an actual role to play in his novels. Scholar and biographer Anka Muhlstein, author of the recently published book, Monsieur Proust's Library, draws out these themes in Proust's work and life, thus providing not only a friendly introduction to the momentous In Search of Lost Time, but also exciting highlights of some of the finest work in French literature.
