The optical sciences at the time of the rise of the wave theory of light, and the role of scientists/statesmen between 1792 and 1848 will be discussed.

Lecture | The Green Revolution in Iran and Civil Society

With Ramin Jahanbegloo. The Green Movement that occurred in the summer of 2009 was a pivotal moment in modern Iranian history and the most promising indigenous democracy movement in the history of the Islamic Middle East. It showcased the strength and determination of the Iranian people as they took a stand against the Islamic Republic in the aftermath of what was clearly a fraudulent national election. Although it had certain shortcomings and failed to counter the brutal campaign of the Islamic Republic, the Green Movement was by no means a total failure. Due to the emergence of the Green Movement, Iranian politics and political culture have, for the foreseeable future, been greatly impacted and altered. The movement also managed to further delegitimize the state and depict its true violent and oppressive nature. Millions of Iranians risked their lives by opposing the injustices of the election and the regime’s brutal crackdown of the protests, their bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten. However, one important question remains: can the gains of the Green Movement continue to flourish and eventually lead to a more free and democratic Iran?

Talk | Artist Talk with Mierle Laderman Ukeles

Mierle Laderman Ukeles, born in 1939 in Denver, Colorado, is “madly in love” with the public domain and public culture and, as a result, nearly all of her work takes place in the public sphere. In 1969, she wrote the Manifesto for Maintenance Art, 1969! that is still exhibited and taught today. Since 1977, when she became the official, unsalaried artist-in-residence at the New York City Department of Sanitation—a position she still holds—Ukeles has created art that deals with the endless maintenance and service work that “keeps the city alive,” urban waste flows, recycling, ecology, urban sustainability and our power to transform degraded land and water into healthy public places. Since the late 1980s, much of Ukeles’ work has been created through “I-I-I: Infrastructure Interface Inc,” her conceptual organization, focused on transforming closed landfills into urban parks. This started with her Percent for Art commission for Fresh Kills in Staten Island, New York, once the largest municipal landfill in the world; Danehy Park in Cambridge; and an Evapotranspiration for Hiriyaan installation at the Tel Aviv Museum proposed for Israel’s largest landfill.
