Bentley Professor of Political Science, and Senior Research Director at the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis (which she co-founded in 1973), at Indiana University in Bloomington. At Arizona State University, Ostrom is the Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity. In 2009, Dr. Ostrom received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel "for her analysis of economic governance, especially the commons." The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences cited Ostrom's research as having "brought the topic from the fringe to the forefront of scientific attention ... by showing how common resources - forests, fisheries, oil fields, or grazing lands - can be managed successfully by the people who use them, rather than by governments or private companies."

Lecture | Carnivorous Virility: Becoming Dog in Pre- and Post-Modernity

In this lecture, Professor Carla Freccero argues for a queering of temporality that would undo our nationally circumscribed and periodized fields of literary study in order to work through figures that haunt texts across historical eras. Her case study involves cynanthropy, the merger of human man and dog; it takes as its starting point the Columbian New World encounter, from reports of dog-headed cannibals to accounts of the devouring dog as the ubiquitous weapon of Spanish colonizers; and concludes with the attack on Diane Whipple by two Presa Canarios in San Francisco in 2001. Freccero is professor of Literature, Feminist Studies, and History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz, where she has taught since 1991. Trained in continental Renaissance Studies, she is the author of Father Figures: Genealogy and Narrative Structure in Rabelais; Popular Culture: An Introduction; and Queer/Early/Modern.

Author Reading | Evgeny Morozov discusses his book The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom

“The revolution will be Twittered!” declared journalist Andrew Sullivan after protests erupted in Iran in June 2009. Yet for all the talk about the democratizing power of the internet, authoritarian governments are effectively using the internet to suppress free speech, hone their surveillance techniques, disseminate cutting-edge propaganda, and pacify their populations with digital entertainment. Journalist and social commentator Evgeny Morozov argues that by falling for the supposedly democratizing nature of the Internet, we may have missed how it also entrenches dictators, threatens dissidents, and makes it harder—not easier—to promote democracy.

Slide Lecture | Julianne Davidow discusses her book Outer Beauty Inner Joy: Contemplating the Soul of the Renaissance

This illustrated talk on the recently published book explores the connection between this philosophy and the art of the Italian Renaissance. We know the Italian Renaissance was an explosion of art and beauty in Western history, but many of us are not familiar with the philosophy that inspired it. Mixing present day values with the teachings of the ancients, Italian philosophers forged an inclusive, synergetic philosophy--one that believed the role of the artist and the making of art held an important place in society.
