Poetry Reading | Go Deep: Poetry Reading, Music Performance and Pastels from Ragged Sky Press

Ragged Sky Press presents the launch of Go Deep, a book of poetry and pastels, with a reading and musical performance. POETS: Newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma, Steve Nolan called every person in the country rumored to have the same form of cancer. He was misinformed about NJ DeVico’s leukemia; she had myelodysplastic syndrome. The initial phone call revealed his love of poetry and her love of art. A collaboration—and friendship—was born. Nolan has been writing poetry for 40 years, has spent time in Afghanistan, and as a social worker in the US Army and Air Force. DeVico fell in love with Crayola crayons 56 years ago, but has since moved up to oil pastels. MUSICIANS: Marion Beckenstein (vocal, autoharp, keyboard) has sung extensively with Steve Reich and Musicians, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Music Before 1800 and the Long Island Baroque Ensemble, among others. She has been described by The New York Times as "pure and unflinching" - that is, her voice has. Bryan Brown (vocal, guitar, keyboard) plays in the post-Nuggetist Shanghai Love Motel of New York City as well as sundry other pre-, post-, and non-Nuggetist ensembles. He has been described as "flinching, but subtle about it."

Performance | Volumes for Sound: Voice Recital

This event brings together experimental vocalists Odeya Nini and Tatyana Tenenbaum to explore the possibilities of Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson’s Volumes for Sound as conduits for the voice. When hooked up to microphones and electronic instruments, Davidson and Dubbin’s sculptures capture, amplify and reshape emitted sound. In this new collaboration, Tenenbaum and Nini will exchange improvisations in response, broadening the artists’ investigations of sound and its interactions with the performing and listening body. Melissa Dubbin and Aaron S. Davidson’s work has been described as addressing “processes of transmission and reception, interference and transference” often seeking to materialize immaterial or ephemeral states of matter. They have co-authored a body of works producing forms, objects, images and experiences, equally incorporating the mediums of photography, video, sound, performance, sculpture and artists books since they began working together in 1998. Odeya Nini is a Los Angeles–based experimental vocalist and contemporary composer. At the locus of her interests are performance practices, gesture, textural harmony, tonal animation, and the illumination of minute sounds, in works spanning chamber music to vocal pieces and collages of musique concrète. Tatyana Tenenbaum is a choreographer and composer exploring the phenomenal space of the singing body. Within this, she considers the canon of “American musical theater,” and how its embodied history shapes contemporary, cultural narratives.

Tour | Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Tour

When people think about holiday decorations in New York City, they usually think of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the lavish store window displays. But some of the best sights to be seen are actually in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. Starting in the 1980’s, Christmas started getting bigger and brighter out in Brooklyn with each passing year. Expect to see massive, professionally- done light displays (some costing upwards of $20,000!). There is an unspoken competition among the home owners in the neighborhood, so some have added huge lawn ornaments and motorized displays, making for a lavish holiday spectacle. Dyker Heights has truly become a “must-see” for many people during the holidays.

Concert | Hook, Wine, and Thinker: An A Cappella Concert with The Art Mob

The Art Mob, an uncommon a cappella chorus, wows audiences with an oddball mix of offbeat, witty, and occasionally heartrending music from bygone days. Now in its 37th year, the 15-member Mob specializes in Victorian parlor songs, Sacred Harp hymns, 1920s radio gospel, scary old children’s ditties, Tin Pan Alley numbers, English folk tunes, temperance anthems, jazz and doo-wop. The Fall 2017 concert delves into three of our favorite topics: drinking (or not); thinking (or not); and catchin’ fish (or not). Watch them weave these motifs into a coherent (or not) evening of harmony and fun. They open in ragtime and close in a rhumba. The performance concludes with a sing-along of favorite holiday carols. The Art Mob is: Brent Frederick (music director), Connie Beckley, Hannah Campbell, Gaynor Coté, Martin Donach, Frank Donno, Richard Haas, Lauren Hsu, Amanda Keating, Anne Kostick, Paul Martin Kovic, Emilia Mahaffey, Jaye Maynard, Dean Rainey, and Kirsten Skrinde.
