Conference | Present Past: Time, Memory, and the Negotiation of Historical Justice

In considering the politics and policies of commemorating the past, this conference probes how public discourses about memory change over time. Papers that explore how the past is known, interpreted, conceptualized, or articulated, and how such representations evolve with the passage of time, are welcome. How has the passage of time changed the way memories of historical violence, atrocity and genocide are represented in the public sphere? In what ways do political, social and cultural forces influence, appropriate, or stifle these memories in different ways as the original event recedes into the more distant past? Related topics include the globalization of memory, and with it the increasing popularity of commemorative memorial practices. The proliferation of museums and memorials, the increase in confessional or memorial literature, and the surge of memory laws against Holocaust and genocide denial are some examples of the historical, cultural and legal phenomena that speak to questions of how individuals and communities remember.

Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Discussion | Civilizing the Monster: Romantic Longings in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 novel began as a late-night parlor game with her husband, the poet Percy Shelley, her stepsister Claire Clairmont, the poet Lord Byron, and Byron’s doctor John Polidori, centering on who could write the best horror tale. Since then, Shelley’s novel has been adapted to stage and film and has generated innumerable interpretations. Mary Shelley’s mythic text will be discussed through its many interpretations and its distinct language and style, addressing its repercussion on several disciplines. Dreamlike and nightmarish scenarios, represented in works by Romantic composers from Schubert to Strauss, will be examined in connection with similar literary techniques in Frankenstein and in reference to the several attempts by the Creature to humanize and civilize himself. With: Prof. Nancy Yousef James Melo, ERC Musicologist and Senior Editor at RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

Opening Reception | Jeju Haenyeo: Photographs by David Alan Harvey

A haenyeo is a woman diver who gathers products for a living, and Jeju is home to the largest number of them in Korea. The women have received a considerable amount of attention around the globe. The haenyeo symbolize Jeju women - with their unyielding spirit they played a leading role booting the Jeju economy by working all over the country. Jeju Haenyeo is intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO and Magnum Photographer David Alan Harvey stayed in Jeju for about a month and continued to be inspired by haenyeo every day. David Alan Harvey (June 6, 1944) is an American Photographer. Harvey is based in North Carolina and New York City and has been a full member of the Magnum Photos agency since 1967. He has photographed extensively for National Geographic magazine, and in 1978 was named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association. Harvey is publisher and editor of Burn Magazine, an online publication featuring the work of emerging photographers. Photographer's Afterword: "I was amazed every morning by these strong willed women It's clearly hard physical work and yet the women seem happy and are constantly joking and laughing with each other.... I stayed in Jeju for about a month and continued to be inspired by haenyeo everyday. I wanted to give very special and humble thank you to all haenyeo who made me feel at home. I came to admire their resilience, free spirit, sense of humor, and warmth. These women divers showed me a whole new world. Bobbing around out there in the frigid Pacific on their little foam floats and then kicking down without oxygen tanks to pick up a few abalones of the ocean floor was simply something to witness. I was so honored to be in their presence."

Tour | Dyker Heights Christmas Lights Tour

When people think about holiday decorations in New York City, they usually think of the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and the lavish store window displays. But some of the best sights to be seen are actually in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. Starting in the 1980’s, Christmas started getting bigger and brighter out in Brooklyn with each passing year. Expect to see massive, professionally- done light displays (some costing upwards of $20,000!). There is an unspoken competition among the home owners in the neighborhood, so some have added huge lawn ornaments and motorized displays, making for a lavish holiday spectacle.
