Tour | Greenwich Village Neighborhood Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Staged Reading | Play Reading: The Ballad of Charlie and Cate by Ed Malone

The Ballad of Charlie and Cate is a darkly comic play that traces the rise and fall — and rise again — of two working class sisters, Cate and Charlie Maloney. The Maloney sisters currently reside in Tallaght, a sexy, sassy, but ultimately shambolic suburb of Dublin in the romantic republic of old Ireland. The play’s language is choreographed as an exhilarating verbal ballet that includes love, death, sex, rock ‘n’ roll, ghosts, Gabriel Byrne, The Beatles, Abba, The Pogues, Simon Cowell, an unwanted son, a runaway Dad, a suicidal Mam, a predatory teacher, a sadistic landlord and the River Liffey.

Lecture | Hindemith’s String Quartets and The Craft of Musical Composition

With Dr. Cyrus Beroukhim, Associate Professor of Music. Paul Hindemith the composer is inseparable from Hindemith the performer, educator, and theorist. His active participation in multiple facets of musical life exposed him to a wealth of knowledge, reflected in his compositions. In particular, his work as a theorist influenced the development of his musical language, culminating in the three volumes of The Craft of Musical Composition. To effectively analyze his music, one must have a firm grasp of how he formulated his unique theoretical concepts. This document, separated into two parts, provides the foundation for analysis of Hindemith’s music and attempts to show his stylistic development through dynamic analyses of the first, fourth, and seventh string quartets.

Poetry Reading | An Evening of Syrian Poetry

With the plight of Syria in the headlines, and the fate of the nation uncertain, many of us are inundated with tremendous amounts of misinformation and un-nuanced analysis. Complex and fraught times, however, have often been creative times; and keen observers have learned that artists are the most potent of historians, witnesses and interpreters of the tribulations of the time. This evening, we will bring together five passionate voices. They will share their poetry, in Arabic and English, and offer rich, complicated and powerful reflections. Representing a broad spectrum of disciplines and expertise, these acclaimed poets come from various backgrounds in Syria. And while they each have a distinct style and poetic rendering, they all come from the highly respected and profoundly fertile terrain that is Modern Syrian Poetry.

As well as the concept of “work,” the idea of “non-work,” of being “out of work,” will be discussed. This is the focus of Martin Jörg Schäfer’s talk Assessing the Benefits.

Concert | The Art Mob presents Deadpan Alley

The Art Mob is playing it straight (sort of). Buster Keaton straight. Bob Newhart straight. The sly word, the hidden jab, the slightly raised eyebrow. Combine that with their penchant for doing music by folks who are long dead. Oh, and add the occasional Tin Pan Alley tune to the mix. Deadpan. Tin Pan Alley. Deadpan Alley. Get it? Come hear the Art Mob, an uncommon a cappella chorus of 17-ish intrepid singers. They will wow you with their patented mix of offbeat, witty, and occasionally heart-rending Victorian parlor songs, Sacred Harp hymns, and radio gospel, with some jazz, country, and new music mixed in.
