Designated a New York City Landmark and included on the National Register of Historic Places, the Cemetery is comprised of subterranean marble vaults built at a time when fears of a yellow fever epidemic had outlawed in-earth burials. Instead of headstones, marble plaques were set into the Cemetery’s walls, leaving a oasis of tranquil green space in the bustling East Village.
