Performance | Merritt Johnson's Balancing Act, a 4-Hour Durational Performance

A 4-hour-long durational performance. Balance requires physical coordination, mental concentration, calm, and a sense of humor. Balance is on the brink of collapse in every direction. In this solo performance, Merritt Johnson focuses on the act of balancing, and on acting balanced. Using increasingly ridiculous physical action and exhaustive duration, Balancing Act embraces the awkwardness, tension and humor found in balancing: cultures, art, survival, family, form, function, physical and mental fitness. In the four-hour performance, Johnson will balance on the books: Art History by Marilyn Stokstad (Instructor Review copy), The Art of Color by Johannes Itten, The Beast And the Sovereign by Jacques Derrida, Power/Knowledge by Michel Foucault and Who Sings the Nation State by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak and Judith Butler. The books underfoot are alternately read aloud and balanced on the artist’s head as she simultaneously attempts to balance silver juice pouches, gold leafed plaster casts of applesauce cups, a bag of beads and a turkey feather.

Concert | Gospel: Tye Tribbett / Tasha Cobbs

Although Tye Tribbett has toured and performed with some of the biggest artists in the secular world, including Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Elton John and Jill Scott, this Grammy-nominated artist’s musical talents lie in the realm of Gospel music. Tribbett passionately spreads the goodness of God through his music. When Tasha Cobbs took the stage at Northview Christian Church in Montgomery, Alabama in 2012, she did so neither as a nationally renowned vocalist, nor as a recording artist making her major-label debut. Instead, with microphone in hand, she ascended the platform prepared to do what she had done every week since her teenage years—lead the congregation into worship. It is no surprise then that the result of her effort, the album, Grace stands as a moving example of the raw power of a live worship experience.

Dance Performance | Jazz & Dance: Dance Heginbotham with the Raymond Scott Orchestrette / Butler, Bernstein & The Hot 9

A premier exponent of New Orleans piano, the adventurous virtuoso Henry Butler teams up with crack arranger Steven Bernstein (Sex Mob, Millennial Territory Orchestra) to dive into the roots of jazz. Butler’s elegant vocals and driving improvisations and Bernstein’s inventive trumpet power a fresh, forward-looking sound. With master drummer Herlin Riley, bassist Reginald Veal, and members of the MTO, the newly formed The Hot 9 reframes the deep regional pedigree of classics by Bessie Smith and Fats Waller alongside Butler’s gleefully exploratory originals. Dance Heginbotham creates highly structured, technically rigorous, and theatrical choreography with the trademark athleticism, vigor, and humor of choreographer John Heginbotham, until recently of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Along with Twin (to music by Aphex Twin) and throwaway (set to Daft Punk), Dance Heginbotham will premiere Manhattan Research, set to the idiosyncratic catalog of mid-century maverick composer, bandleader, and electronic music pioneer Raymond Scott, made famous in classic Looney Tunes cartoons—and brought to new life through the live accompaniment of the Raymond Scott Orchestrette.

Theater | Shakespeare Outdoors: Richard III, Presented by The Drilling Company

To commemorate the bones of Richard III being found in an English parking lot, The Drilling Company will present Shakespeare's tragedy of the crook-back king. Hamilton Clancy, Artistic Director, will direct and Alessandro Colla will be featured as the king. Shows are offered while the lot is in use. The action sometimes happens around a parked car which drives away during a performance. At such times, the players stop and the audience moves its chairs, pausing the performance the same way a show would stop for rain uptown in Central Park. It's all part of the fun.
