Film | El Futuro (2013): Young and Partying in Socialist Spain (online through Apr. 15)

A group of young people dance and drink at a house. The atmosphere is festive and cheerful. Socialist victory in the general elections of 1982 seems recent. The night is full of euphoria and celebration. The attempt of coup d etat made in 1981 appears to be quite far away. We could say that in Spain, in 1982, everything was future. However, the future also looks closer at enormous speed, like a black hole that devours everything in its path. Director: Luis Lopez Carrasco Stars: Lucia Alonso, Rafael Ayuso Mateo, Marta Bassols 67 min. In Spanish with English subtitles

Lecture | "No Make Erreur": How a Cameroonian Pop Song Offered a Biting Critique (online)

Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung, the current director of Savvy Contemporary in Berlin and future director of Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, will present this talk The 1986 pop song "No Make Erreur," composed and performed by the Cameroonian musician Lapiro de Mbanga, was a dance floor sensation, and also offered biting criticism of the capitalist urge to exploit and appropriate. No doubt, the sensibility contributed to the singer’s imprisonment years later. The song, which is six minutes and 34 seconds long, seems today like a true and revealing anthem of the twentieth century, and opens a discussion about where our societies are today in their struggle but also in their joy—a sociopolitical Spannungsfeld, a field of voltage and strain.

Lecture | The Lenin Dilemma: Are Cooperatives Made to Build Socialism or Capitalism? (online)

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, in Tsarist Russia, as well as in other industrialised countries, cooperatives were, alongside collectivism, claimed to be an alternative to private enterprises. This lecture examines how these cooperatives, once a tool against capitalism, were progressively integrated as a major instrument of the Soviet regime. It explores how and why cooperatives have been used by the Bolsheviks, as well as by different social groups in cities and campaigns, in Russia in general and in the Perm region in particular. Focusing on the narratives, uses and actors of cooperatives, this lecture contributes to a the writing of a socio-economic history of Russia, and to broader understanding of the Early Soviet years. Speaker Anna Safronova is a PhD researcher at Paris Panthéon-Sorbonne University.

Book Discussion | The Pine Islands: A Novel of Transformations (online)

Gilbert Silvester, eminent scholar of beard fashions in film, wakes up one day from a dream that his wife has cheated on him. Certain the dream is a message, and unable to even look at her, he flees - immediately, irrationally, inexplicably - for Japan. In Tokyo he discovers the travel writings of the great Japanese poet Basho. Keen to cure his malaise, he decides to find solace in nature the way Basho did. Suddenly, from Gilbert's directionless crisis there emerges a purpose: a pilgrimage in the footsteps of the poet to see the moon rise over the pine islands of Matsushima. Although, of course, unlike the great poet, he will take a train. Along the way he falls into step with another pilgrim: Yosa, a young Japanese student clutching a copy of The Complete Manual of Suicide. Together, Gilbert and Yosa travel across Basho's disappearing Japan, one in search of his perfect ending and the other a new beginning. Serene, playful, and profound, Marion Poschmann's The Pine Islands is a story of the transformations we seek and the ones we find along the way.

Opening Reception | Rosa Barba: Drawing the Infinite

The gallery’s first solo exhibition by the Berlin-based artist Rosa Barba. The presentation, which brings together two of her recent film installations and a selection of her sculptural works from the past decade, highlights Barba’s continuous engagement with the representational function of images and language as they are channeled through cinematic apparatuses. For Barba, cinema is a sovereign and speculative instrument that critically questions the singular properties of space and time, opening up the boundaries of traditional perception. Barba challenges linear modes of presenting and organizing knowledge by reshaping and representing imagery from scientific disciplines, such as astronomy and geology, as well as cultural archives, through shifts in gesture, genre, as well as the decontextualization of information and documents. The films, installations, and sculptures in this exhibition situate her work between experimental documentary and fictional narrative, and an oscillating logic is put forth, one that reflects how information is processed and transformed.

In her new book. Alexander weaves together those reflections with ruminations on groundbreaking works of art by some of our most extraordinary artists in order to ask how we reckon with who we are as a nation and how we move forward..

Discussion | Governing the Climate? The Paris Agreement at Work (online)

It has been more than six years since COP 21 was held in Paris in December 2015. We’re now able to take a step back, take stock, and ask some important questions about the Paris process: How can very ambitious emissions reduction goals be met by voluntary national commitments? Do commitments translate into transformative policies? What are the most promising mechanisms, initiatives, and developments that could enable developing countries to deliver on ambitious emissions reduction targets? How does the formal regime (post-Paris process) interact with initiatives, actions and commitments from the industrial and financial sectors? How will the aftermath of the invasion of Ukraine impact international climate policy? The Center on Global Energy Policy and the Columbia Global Centers | Paris will host a panel of experts to address these questions, and more.   Moderator: Pierre Noël, Global Research Scholar, Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University   Panelists: Scott Barrett, Lenfest-Earth Institute Professor of Natural Resource Economics, Columbia University Professor, Sciences Po; and Centennial Professor, London School of Economics Amy Dahan, Emeritus Research Director at the CNRS (Paris, France) Paul Watkinson, Counsellor to Director for European and International Action, Ministry for Ecological Transition, France

Play | Larry and Lucy: Drama Reminiscent of Midnight Cowboy, Whitnail and I

Reminiscent in tone of classic films like "Midnight Cowboy" and "Whitnail & I," Larry & Lucy is about two emotionally wounded outsiders struggling to find a sense of place in the world. The play touches on the themes of loneliness, togetherness and the continuing opiate crisis in America. Larry is a worn-out, 63-year-old street muralist who now barely supports his meager, one room Hollywood existence by driving for Uber. Lucy is a fragile Kansas City teen runaway looking to beat a heroin addiction. After a few chance meetings the two embark on a series of misadventures that help them gain insight into their troubled lives, yet also reminds them of the difficulties they'll face when trying to overcome their deep rooted afflictions.

Tour | Splendor by the Sea: Newport Mansions of the Gilded Age (online)

During the Gilded Age, when one heard Newport mentioned, images of the amazingly rich would come to mind parading in carriages up and down Bellevue Avenue to show off new finery. Their summer "cottages" were anything but. You'll see French inspired chateaux, Italian palazzos, English manors and even some castles, enjoy tales of dazzling entertainments and whimsical parties like the Ball Blanc, the Dogs Dinner and a feast where guests dug for party favors like emeralds, diamonds and rubies using Tiffany silver trowels in a sandbox that ran the length of the table. Architect and author Gary Lawrance leads a virtual tour of these mansions - many of which have been destroyed. You'll travel from the early days when Newport was a quiet summer resort, through the influx of extremely wealthy families who built the grand homes in their glory years.
