Slide Lecture | Hitchcock’s Composer and the Sound of Suspense: Oscar-Winning Composer Bernard Herrmann (virtual)

The screeching violins of Psycho’s shower murder. The seductive musical whirlpool of Vertigo. The lonely saxophone that haunts Travis Bickle’s Taxi Driver. These sounds could only come from the dark genius of Bernard Herrmann - the Oscar-winning composer who worked with Hitchcock, Welles and Scorsese. Come along and meet the artist behind the classic scores for North by Northwest, On Dangerous Ground and others, and discover how his explosive personality was matched by intense sensitivity, a compassion for outsiders and a matchless gift for “getting inside the drama.”   Presented by four-time Emmy nominated producer, director and author Steven C. Smith. He has created over 200 long-form documentaries.

Slide Lecture | Can Art Stop a War? The Power of Posters (virtual)

From the Russian Revolution to the now-decades-long war in Afghanistan, posters have been central to winning the hearts and minds of the people who pay the costs of war with their lives and their tax dollars. They also have been critical for mobilizing opposition to war. Although many predicted that paper posters would become obsolete in the digital age, they continue to be produced in great numbers. Art historian Carol A. Wells, founder and executive director of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, will show how posters have been used to protest injustice and promote social change throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The talk will also highlight the long political poster tradition of appropriation and image recycling.

Concert | Music from Auschwitz (in-person and online)

The concert will feature ten short musical pieces arranged by Polish political prisoners who were members of the men's orchestra in the Auschwitz I camp. Using popular German hits of the 1930s and 40s, they arranged and orchestrated these tangos, waltzes, and foxtrots for a dance band that played Sunday concerts for the Auschwitz garrison near the camp commandant's villa. The musical pieces were recently rediscovered in the archives of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum in Poland. Led by conductor Oriol Sans, a University of Michigan student orchestra will perform the original musical pieces interspersed with lines, spoken by the singers, from testimonies and interviews with members of the Auschwitz I men's orchestra after the war. Silent for more than seventy years, the voices and stirring melodies of those imprisoned at Auschwitz will be brought to life in the Museum's Edmond J. Safra Hall.
