Museums | (IN-PERSON) Dutch Masterpieces: Paintings by Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer

Dutch paintings of the 17th century: the Golden Age of Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer. Through sixty-seven works of art organized thematically, In Praise of Painting orients visitors to key issues in 17th century Dutch culture--from debates about religion and conspicuous consumption to painters' fascination with the domestic lives of women. The presentation also provides the opportunity to conserve and display rarely exhibited paintings, including Margareta Haverman's A Vase of Flowers--one of only two known paintings by the artist. The exhibition takes its title from one of the period's major works of art theory, Philips Angel's The Praise of Painting (1642), a pioneering defense of realism in art.

Discussion | Fargo (1996): Film Historian, Curator and Journalist Discuss the Oscar-Winning Film (virtual)

Join Classic Talk Back about the 1996 film "Fargo" with film curator Gary Palmucci, film historian Max Alvarez and journalist Todd Melby - and maybe a few surprise guests from the movie. Fargo is a reality-based crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987. Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a car salesman in Minneapolis who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare) to kidnap his own wife. Jerry will collect the ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell), paying the thugs a small portion and keeping the rest to satisfy his debts. The scheme collapses when the thugs shoot a state trooper. Fargo received seven Academy Awards nominations, winning two. In 1998, the American Film Institute named it one of the 100 greatest American films in history. Please watch the film prior the talk (a link for the film is below).

Musical | Rendezvous with Marlene: The Story of Marlene Dietrich (virtual)

Rendezvous with Marlene is based on a three-hour phone exchange in 1987 between legendary actress Marlene Dietrich and Ute Lemper. At the time, Dietrich was living as a recluse in her Paris apartment, while Lemper was being celebrated by Parisian audiences for her performance as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. In this one-woman show, Lemper shares Dietrich’s story, channels her emotions, and celebrates songs that highlight various chapters of her career, from the Berlin cabaret years to her later collaborations with Burt Bacharach. In one of the most poignant periods of her life, Dietrich was especially vocal against the Nazis during World War II, renouncing her German citizenship and passionately supporting Jews and other dissidents who—like her—faced discrimination and retribution. Musical selections include “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Falling in Love Again,” and “Lili Marleen.” The streaming will be available through May 31.
