City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Opening Reception | Photographs: Stefano Pasqualetti's Emotions from Pisa

On the one hand, this photographic collection could engage the keen observer with a journey through the city which is as common as it is unusual, on the other hand, it could attract the attention of the absent-minded. Or more. With a camera always in hand the result is always the same: strike down there, straight into the deep. First themselves, in that thousandth of a second that opens and closes the shutter. And then, others. One must, indeed, be just there, in that place and at that time to take a picture, and how can one define the act of being in THAT particular place, and at just THAT particular time? Pure coincidence.

Lecture | How to Get Rid of a Monument and Replace It: A Contribution to the Memory Culture of Weimar Germany

The long nineteenth century suffered from Denkmal-Manie, monument mania. As a result, the short Weimar era inherited thousands of monuments, had to take care of them, deal with them, get rid of them. At the same time, the 1920s were forced to erect even more monuments, this time not to the Great Dead White Males but to a collective of three million dead white males. The period needed not only more but also different types of memorial sites. How did modernism contribute to this task? Wolfgang Kemp's lecture tries to show how Weimar Germany overcame the nineteenth-century concept of the monument stylistically as well as practically, especially in those cases where existing monuments were either added to and commented upon or replaced by new creations. The Lebenslüge, the intrinsic fallacy of the monument, is its claim to eternity. Weimar’s creative contributions to memorial culture did not survive 1933.

Lecture | Notre Dame de Paris: Restoring a Double Architectural Icon

Between gothic and classical styles, Notre Dame de Paris was the most accomplished cathedral in Europe in the early 13th century. Seven centuries later, Viollet le Ducs work made it the most emblematic example of 19th century restoration. The Cathedral is a double icon and a masterpiece of both the 13th and 19th centuries, and Benjamin Moutons contemporary interventions challenge us to once again rethink historic preservation for the 21st century. Benjamin Mouton is Chief Architect and Inspector General of Historical Monuments, and his responsibilities include the restoration of Notre-Dame.

The MAD-LIB[rary] will be an opportunity for the public to participate in true Mad Lib fashion in a zany, surreal, Dada-inspired, and perhaps nonsensical assemblage extravaganza. MAD-LIB[rary] invites artists and writers—an explosive combination of luminaries and rising stars—to contribute limited edition material of their choice. The event will provide attendees from the realms of the art and literary worlds alike an opportunity to curate their own magazine or booklet content, and B-Y-O-creative-vision. Paying homage to the histories of literature, art, book-art, found art, flea markets, and book fairs, MAD-LIB[rary] provides an alternative from the glossy, pre-packaged culture of mass media. MAD-LIB[rary] is all at once a living archive, a museum, a magazine, a madness.
