Conference | Central Asia's Hidden Offshore Ties: The Politics of Money-Laundering and Virtual State-Building

For the first two decades of independence, most academics and policy analysts have viewed Central Asia as detached from the global economy and the diffusion of international liberal economic norms and practices. This assumption is highly selective analytically and empirically inaccurate. Re-orienting our focus away from formal trade flows to the more hidden offshore world and institutions of contemporary finance, we see, in fact, multiple areas that connect the region to the global economy. Central Asian elites have learned to strategically use global financial institutions and offshore vehicles to split the legal personality of nominally state-controlled assets, launder moneys, and structure side payments for their dealings with external actors such as foreign militaries and energy companies. For the most part, however, these complex webs of offshore entities have largely insulated governments from sustained international scrutiny. This half-day conference brings together leading scholars, practitioners and advocates to analyze, for the first time, Central Asia's hidden offshore connections.

City Walk | Midtown Manhattan Tour

Arguably the world's most valuable, busiest and most crowded pieces of real estate, Midtown Manhattan is what most visitors think of when they think of New York City. Home to some of the city's most iconic architecture, from Gothic to Post-Modern and from Beaux-Arts to Art Deco (lots of Art Deco). it's not difficult to understand why. But just behind the massive facades, lie facinating histories just waiting to be unveiled.

Author Reading | Carlos Terrones discusses his book The Other Front In Afghanistan

Many factors, such as security and civil unrest, can complicate building a local institution. In places such as Maiwand, one of the birthplaces of the Taliban, success is determined only if Afghans are willing to take the lead after we leave. We made progress in Maiwand during my tour and if our Afghan colleagues continue to build on the success that we achieved as a community; then we could have a long-term success. The book includes stories as well as details of the technical work that I did in the District of Maiwand. After several months of hard work and perseverance we saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

City Walk | Greenwich Village Tour

Greenwich Village is among Manhattan's most desirable and expensive residential neighborhoods. It's history, however, betrays it's monied status. The Village, with it's quiet, shaded streets, lined with lovely brick and brownstone townhouses, was once the incubating ground of artistic, social and political movements that have helped shape US history. From the Beats to the Folk Movement, from workers rights to gay rights, the Village has often been the center of it all.

Film | Documentary from Spain: Carlos Saura's Flamenco (1995)

As a hall fills with performers, a narrator says that flamenco came from Andalucia, a mix of Greek psalms, Mozarabic dirges, Castillian ballads, Jewish laments, Gregorian chants, African rhythms, and Iranian and Romany melodies. The film presents thirteen rhythms of flamenco, each with song, guitar, and dance: the uptempo bularías, a brooding farruca, an anguished martinete, and a satiric fandango de huelva. There are tangos, a taranta, alegrías, siguiriyas, soleás, a guajira of patrician women, a petenera about a sentence to death, villancicos, and a final rumba. Families present numbers, both festive and fierce. 100 minutes

Lecture | The Antichrist and the Crucified: Friedrich Nietzsche’s Last Texts

In 1882, Nietzsche in one of his most popular texts proclaims the "death of God." Seven years later, in one of his last letters, he writes: "The world is transfigured, for God is on earth. Do you not see how all heavens rejoice?" Heinrich Detering's talk, The Antichrist and the Crucified: Friedrich Nietzsche’s Last Texts, tries to reconstruct the way that leads from the first proclamation to the second. It is guided neither by medicine, nor by philosophy, nor theology, but rather by literary studies. The talk shall be concerned with conceptions of figures, models of imagery and narrative schemes, with some of the grands récits of the European tradition. Heinrich Detering will try to read Nietzsche’s last texts, in retrospect, as a narrative, consisting of The Antichrist, Ecce homo, and the letters of his last week—a narrative that changes its own shape and modes of narrating while emerging. Narrative figures, named "the Crucified," "Dionysos," and, among others, "Nietzsche," melt into one another, take on new forms, develop new meanings. Thus, Nietzsche invents a new version of the story of the Passion-as-Transfiguration. ,/br> Heinrich Detering: Born in 1959. Professor for German and Comparative Literature in Göttingen, Germany. Since 2011 president of the German Academy of Language and Letters. Books on Thomas Mann, Nietzsche, Hans Christian Andersen, Bob Dylan, literary theory, among others. Co-editor of the critical Thomas-Mann-edition. Several volumes of poetry. Recipient of the Leibniz-prize, the Andersen-prize, the Criticism Award, the Werner-Heisenberg-medal, among others; honorary degree from Aarhus University, Denmark.
