Concert | New Sounds: Jungle / Ibeyi

Jungle - Jungle hail from London and released their debut self-titled album in July 2014 on XL Recordings. The group’s buzz began to rise earlier in the year: the BBC Sound of 2014 nomination, the 4 million plus plays of the ‘Platoon’ video, the US tour that sold out on the back of their SXSW appearance – before Jungle even had an official record out in America – it’s a DIY story. Working from their home studio in Shepherd’s Bush, the core Jungle duo known only as J and T set out their store long before they came on any label’s radar with a brace of handmade mini-classics. Ibeyi - Naomi and Lisa-Kaindé Díaz are the daughters of the late Cuban percussionist Anga Diaz. Naomi plays percussive instruments, the Cajon and the Batas, while Lisa plays piano. Together the twins have learned the songs of their father’s culture, Yoruba. Yoruba traveled from West Africa to Cuba with slavery in the 1700s. The Yoruba people have the highest twinning rate in the World, and twins occupy an important position within Yoruba culture. Ibeyi sing in English and Yoruban, and have created a minimalist sound that merges elements of their heritage with their natural love of modern music as teenagers growing up in Paris, citing artists such as James Blake and King Krule amongst their wide range of influences.

Theater | United States of Banana, a Play That Explores the Post-9/11 American Psyche

Adapted for the stage by Juan Pablo Felix and based upon the book by Giannina Braschi, United States of Banana dramatizes the post-911 American psyche around the politics of empire and independence. Hamlet and Zarathustra join Giannina on a quest to liberate the Puerto Rican prisoner Segismundo from the dungeon of the Statue of Liberty, where he has been imprisoned by his father, the King of the United States of Banana, for more than 100 years for the crime of being born. The work depicts New York City as the Darwinist capital of the capitalist word and U.S.imperialism as doomed as a chicken with its head cut off. Latin American immigrants are granted American passports, Puerto Rico is declared the 51st state, and then comes the revolution.

Dance Performance | DanceBrazil / Forro in the Dark

The dancers in founding artistic director Jelon Vieira’s DANCEBRAZIL “glow enthusiastically as they let rip at highest energy,” (NY Times) fusing contemporary movement with the dance/martial arts form of capoeira. The company formed after evolving from grass-roots workshops at the Clark Center for the Arts in NYC in 1977. Alvin Ailey joined its board of directors in 1980 and helped focus its objectives, emphasizing DanceBrazil’s ability to speak to a broad North American community. Within a few years DanceBrazil premiered at Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall, and it has been a favorite on stages around the world ever since. The program for its long-awaited return to the Bandshell includes Malungos, which takes its name from a slang word used among enslaved Africans traveling on ships to Brazil, and Gueto, Vieira’s testament to the vitality of marginalized communities. The evening begins with a festive set by FORRO IN THE DARK, a collective of New York-based Brazilian ex pats: Mauro Refosco (zabumba drum and vocals), Guilherme Monteiro (guitar and vocals) and Jorge Continentino (pifano flute, sax and vocals). One of the NYC’s must-see buzz bands, these guys take the traditional hip-swiveling, dancefloor-filling, rural party music of Brazil’s northeastern states “to new heights by drawing on influences ranging from Enrique Iglesias to Beck.” (NPR) Gates open at 6:30PM.

Exiled to a fantastical island, Prospero unleashes a churning storm to shipwreck the traitor brother who stole his throne and settle the score once and for all. But bitter revenge is upended by newfound love in this sublime masterpiece that proves we are all “such stuff as dreams are made on.” Tony Award nominee Michael Greif (Romeo and Juliet, Our Lady of Kibeho, If/Then, Next to Normal) directs.
