Classical Music | Orchestral Works by Buxtehede & More

Organist Avi Stein will transport audiences into the musical milieu from which Johann Sebastian Bach emerged. As a member of a distinguished family of composers and instrumentalists, Bach was keenly aware of his place in the lineage, and his vast collection of manuscripts — by relatives, predecessors, and contemporaries — reveals that wide repertoire of inspiration. Along with soprano soloist Elisse Albian and musicians from the Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Stein will perform intensely passionate pieces from two of Bach’s influential 17th-century predecessors: Dieterich Buxtehude (Trio Sonata in A Minor and Herr, wenn ich nur Dich hab) and Christoph Bernhard (Aus der Tieffen).

Book Discussion | Learn about Unconventional Modernist Architect Ella Briggs (+ Q&A & Reception)

Attend a panel discussion on the life and work of Austrian modernist architect, interior designer, and artist Ella Briggs (1880–1977). This event marks the recent publication of Finding Ella Briggs: The Life and Work of an Unconventional Architect, edited by cultural and design historian Dr. Elana Shapira and architectural historian Dr. Despina Stratigakos. The evening will feature presentations by Dr. Despina Stratigakos and Dr. Elana Shapira. A discussion moderated by Dr. Stephanie Buhmann, Head of Visual Arts, Architecture, and Design at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, will frame the event. The program will conclude with an open Q&A session inviting audience participation. A reception will follow. Whether advocating for women’s access to architectural education or writing about innovative housing for American women’s magazines such as Good Housekeeping, Briggs embodied the transatlantic circulation of modernist ideas. Drawing on new research and international collaboration, the recently published volume brings together scholars who reassess her life, networks, and projects.

Screening | Green Streets (1989): Acclaimed Documentary of NYC Community Gardens (+ FIlmmaker Discussion)

Refuting the notion that the urban environment is inhospitable to organic life, Green Streets documents a wide range of community gardens that have been established in each of New York City's five boroughs and which reflect the city's multicultural diversity. Carrying on the mission of the Urban Community Gardening Movement that sprang up informally in the 1970's, adult and young people alike have taken up spades and shovels to clear abandoned, rubble-strewn lots for flower and vegetable gardens. Cameras visit a "soul food garden," a penthouse arboretum, a playground erected from old tires, a circular garden designed by a modern-day "Adam" and "Eve," and a therapeutic rooftop retreat for recovering substance abusers. At the film's upbeat conclusion, urban tillers proudly display prizes won at the Annual Tenant Gardening Competition. Director: Maria De Luca Followed by a talkback with the filmmaker.

Book Discussion | Prize-Winning, Bestselling Author Shares Her New Memoir, Suddenly Stateside: Postscript

Attend the launch of Marivi Soliven's deeply felt chronicle of immigration, identity, and reinvention, Suddenly Stateside: Postscript. Thirty years after leaving Manila for marriage, graduate student life, and the uncertainties of America, Marivi Soliven returns with Suddenly Stateside: Postscript--a sharp and funny memoir that spans surviving Martial Law to navigating the INS, from learning the dark arts of American housekeeping in Berkeley to the indignities of public restrooms, flashers, driving tests, and a pet rat named Janet, Soliven captures the bewilderment, humor, and wonder of building a life an ocean away from home. Expanded with new essays and postscripts, this collection confronts the long shadows of authoritarianism, the contradictions of belonging to two countries, and the messy, marvelous business of starting over. Unsparing, subversive, and irresistibly engaging, Suddenly Stateside: Postscript affirms the immigrant imagination in all its resilience and hilarity.

Opening Reception | Systems, Power, and Breakdown in Contemporary Practice Across Mediums

SoiL Thornton presents an exhibition that explores systems of control, identity, and institutional structures. Working across media, Thornton examines how meaning is shaped and disrupted by the relationships among artist, institution, and lived experience. The exhibition considers “topping” as both a method and a condition, reflecting dynamics of power, negotiation, and precarity across artistic, social, and material systems. Through these frameworks, Thornton traces how life, labor, health, and property intersect and fragment under contemporary pressures.

In this talk rooted in the Latinx and Caribbean joy that exploded from Bad Bunny’s 2026 Super Bowl halftime show, writers from across the Caribbean join together. They discuss the ways they are constructing identity within and without the diaspora and maintaining their roots through the publication of their creative work. Moderated by Executive Director of the Bronx Book Festival Saraciea Fennell, this discussion features PEN America Board member and author Esmeralda Santiago (Las Madres), award-winning novelist Angie Cruz (How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water), and debut author Justin Haynes (Ibis).

Book Discussion | Bestselling, Award-Winning Historian Shares His New Book, The Wounded Generation: Coming Home After World War II (In Person AND Online!)

This event is a discussion of David Nasaw's new book re-examining a damaged America after the war, The Wounded Generation: Coming Home After World War II. Nasaw presents a complicated portrait, documenting the effects of little-understood PTSD, the doubling divorce rate, rampant alcoholism, women reverting to roles as housewives, and the racism that Black veterans faced. He illuminates a hidden chapter of American history — one of hardship, resilience, and a country in transition. Nasaw is a distinguished professor emeritus of History at the CUNY Graduate Center, bestselling author of The Last Million, and an award-winning biographer of William Randolph Hearst, Andrew Carnegie, and Joseph P. Kennedy. He speaks about the book with journalist, author, and television producer Frank Rich.

Discussion | Learn about the Rikers Public Memory Project Oral History Collection  (In Person AND Online!)

Contributors to the Rikers Public Memory Project explore how oral history can challenge dominant narratives and document the lived realities of incarceration. Coinciding with the opening of the Rikers Public Memory Project oral history collection at the library, this archive—consisting of 90 interviews conducted between 2018 and 2021—preserves and highlights the stories of those most impacted by Rikers Island, including formerly incarcerated individuals and their families. A panel bringing together voices behind the project discusses how these histories confront generational harms and challenge dehumanizing narratives—while also exploring how public memory can advance reparative justice. Featuring: Shana Russell, Historian and Teacher Andrea Nelson, RPMP Administrative and Communications Coordinator Turquoise Martin, RPMP Narrator Tamara Santibañez, Oral Historian and Interdisciplinary Artist
