Talk | The Last Ships from Hamburg Author on the Escape of Russia’s Jews before WWI

During this talk, historian and author Steven Ujifusa presents the fascinating, little-known facts about the Jewish exodus that spared millions from persecution before World War I. He offers insights into the American experience, connecting banking, shipping, politics, immigration nativism, and war, and delivers crucial perspective into the burgeoning refugee crisis of our own time. From 1890 to 1921, 2.5 million Jews fled discrimination and violence in Eastern Europe. Many settled on the Lower East Side and today’s East Village. How such migration was possible is complicated. It would have been impossible except for the unusual collaboration of three titans of business: Jacob Schiff, managing partner of Kuhn, Loeb, and Co., Albert Ballin, managing director of the Hamburg-American Line, and J.P. Morgan, the master mind of the International Mercantile Marine trust.

Opening Reception | Echoes of Land and Breath

Torkwase Dyson's Akua is an immersive, open pavilion featuring a dynamic, multi-channel soundscape. Visitors will experience recorded sounds moving across eight speakers, including layered conversations from Black archives, nature field recordings, and electronic sounds. Inspired by the name of a family member, Akua means "born on Wednesday" in West African Akan tradition. The artist views sound as a physical vibration that can connect our bodies to the world around us. In this installation, she explores the concept of "breath as geography," highlighting how the subtle spaces between words--the breaths, pauses, and ums--carry memories of specific places. Through this sonic composition, Dyson invites reflection on land, water, infrastructure, and migration, urging us to consider what the silence and space in speech can reveal about our connection to the environment.

Play | One-Man Show Exploring Sensationalist Media Story in 1981 Italy: Alfredino, Italy in a Deep Well

On the evening of June 10, 1981. six year old Alfredo (Alfredino) Rampi fell 36 meters deep into a well in Vermicino, a village near Rome. In the next 35 hours, Italy was glued to the TV watching the first non-stop live broadcast to cover the attempt to save him. It was a turning point in the history of Italian TV, which is still studied in journalism schools, and where the modern sensationalist news coverage was (essentially) born. In this solo performance, the story is brought back to life, introducing the many characters of that night: the first journalist who rushed to the scene, the sandwich seller who profited from the attending crowd, President Pertini, the robots Mazinga and Grendizer, and more. At the core of the narration there is Alfredino, stuck in that deep well with his entire country. Written & Performed by Fabio Banfo In Italian with English subtitles.

Opening Reception | Painting the Moral Imagination by a Pivotal Figure of Modernism

This exhibition brings renewed focus to Georges Rouault, a pivotal yet often overlooked figure of Modernism whose work fused bold expressionist form with profound spiritual inquiry. Through incandescent colors and thick black contours reminiscent of stained glass, Rouault blurred the boundaries between sacred and secular, elevating clowns, outcasts, and saints into universal symbols of human resilience and dignity. His decisive brushwork, palette, and deeply humanistic vision forged an art transcending his time, offering a radical reinvention of faith and justice through paint.

Lecture | Rediscovering the Libyan Pharoahs of Egypt with Renowned Egyptologist

This evening, world-renowned Egyptologist and historian Aidan Mark Dodson will explore some of the strands of history of an often-ignored era of Egyptian history, including the way in which a buried history was rediscovered by modern historians and archaeologists. During the tenth through seventh centuries BC, Egypt was ruled by a series of pharaohs of Libyan ancestry. Early in the tenth century BC the first of a long series of pharaohs of Libyan descent ascended the Egyptian throne. Although the earlier Libyan pharaohs seem to have maintained the tradition of a unitary Egyptian state, as time went by Libyan ideas of decentralised control became more prevalent. So, historians find individuals holding both Libyan and Egyptian titles controlling distinct territories around Egypt, some of whom assumed the names and titles of a pharaoh. A single Egyptian state would not be restored until the middle of the seventh century.

Opening Reception | Reflections of Nature

Jochen Lempert's work has been exhibited widely, including at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Trained as a biologist, Lempert's black-and-white photographs explore plants, animals, and natural phenomena with both scientific precision and poetic depth. Using analogue techniques and a 35mm camera, Lempert's images are defined by their soft focus, unexpected juxtapositions, and tactile presence. His work invites reflection on materiality, light, and perception, capturing fleeting moments and subtle relationships within the natural world.

Opening Reception | Reframing the Gaze

Work by Anne Collier is held in the permanent collections of The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim, Tate Modern, LACMA, and SFMOMA, among others. Her acclaimed photographic practice explores the mechanics of image-making and the representation of women in mass media. Portraits continue Collier's investigation into the psychology of looking. Using rephotographed imagery and carefully staged compositions, the series explores the intersection of portraiture, perception, and personal identity in visual culture.

Opening Reception | Sculpture in the Shadows

Artist Matthew Monahan presents a new group of wall-based sculptural reliefs and large-scale works on paper. Known for his exploration between sculpture and painting, Monahan focuses on the problem of modeled relief in these new works. Through gouging, pinching, and subtle material shifts, he creates forms that exist between the seen and unseen, leaving a record of both the incidental and the intentional. Monahan’s sculptures are freed from physical enclosures, allowing light and shadow to express the volume of his forms. These new works continue his exploration of human struggle, both mental and physical, as well as the history of figuration. The figures in his reliefs seem restrained by and bursting from the flat ground around them, embodying a tension between abstraction and empathy.

Opening Reception | Understanding a Leader in Contemporary Conceptual Art, Ernst Caramelle: two dots one line

two dots one line is a comprehensive survey of the work of Austrian artist Ernst Caramelle, one of the leading voices in contemporary conceptual art. Featuring excerpts from Caramelle’s five-decade-spanning oeuvre, the exhibition explores his extensive range of mediums, including experimental works on paper, video installations, publications, and his signature gesso and sun pieces. Additionally, a new site-specific intervention, inspired by distinctive Raimund Abraham-designed architecture will be on view. The exhibition title, two dots one line, reflects Caramelle’s signature approach to visual representation, where simplicity and abstraction become meditations on creation itself. n his hands, simple forms transform into dynamic expressions of possibility, inviting visitors to explore personal interpretations while reflecting on the artistic process. Caramelle’s work blends intellectual rigor and precision with spontaneous creativity. Known for its lightness, wit, and subtlety, his oeuvre examines the nature of art and the artist’s role in shaping meaning. His playful investigations often pose the question, “What is art?” — inviting viewers to reconsider their assumptions and experiences. His compositions—frequently featuring geometric forms, vivid colors, and deliberate arrangements—engage both visually and conceptually. Challenging artistic conventions, he maintains a spirit of joy and experimentation.

Poetry Reading | PEN/Voelcker Award-Winning Poet Discusses Fou ndational Chicano Writer Leo Romero

Poet and educator Rigoberto González provides a talk on the foundational yet overlooked Chicano poet Leo Romero, whose new and selected volume Trees Dream of Water was published earlier this year. Romero’s subject matter is varied, but it continually returns to one place: the natural landscape of the American Southwest. Among Chicano writers, his attention to nature is unique because for him the environment is also a cultural experience, whether it’s the rural Mexican communities of his childhood, or the breathtaking beauty of the high desert he currently calls home. González will read and discuss a selection of Romero’s work, bringing renewed appreciation for this poet who reminds us to look beyond the city limits to find that inner peace we’re all searching for. Reception to follow.
