Book Discussion | Explore How the World of Literary Translation is Changing with Acclaimed Translators & Authors

Together, a panel of writers, translators, and culture experts will explore the evolving role of the translator and why translation remains essential to the future of literature. Learn about how literary translation opens the world to readers, bringing them into conversation with other cultures, languages, and historical contexts. Translators are writers, interpreters, and cultural ambassadors, preserving the nuance and voice that gives literature life. What does the role of the literary translator look like today, in the face of an increasingly globalized world and the advent of AI translations that flatten cultural and linguistic nuance? This vital conversation will bring together acclaimed translators and authors Michael Eskin (The Emprise of Poetry: Durs Grünbein, America, Antisemitism and the Pursuit of Liberty), Annelise Finegan (The Enchanting Lives of Others by Can Xue), Tess Lewis (Nevermore by Cécile Wajsbrot), and former translator for the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly Abdelgabar Mohieldin, with moderator Sandra Smith (Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky).

Book Discussion | What Does It Mean To Flea the Past? Authors Share Their Thoughts

Authors discuss how they engage with the hidden lives of families. What are the secrets that lurk behind the closed doors of a family’s history, unknown or unexplored even to the family itself? And how far must one run to escape them? Carol Bensimon’s Diorama (tr. Zoë Perry and Julia Sanches), Rodrigo Hasbún’s The Invisible Years (tr. Lily Meyer), and Bsrat Mezghebe’s I Hope You Find What You’re Looking For all examine attempts to flee buried pasts—whether in Brazil, Bolivia, or Eritrea—and come to terms with their repercussions in a foreign land. Moderated by writer and critic Anderson Tepper.

Book Discussion | Exploring Dissent through Literature: resistance, Freedom, & Autocracy

Enjoy a conversation with three authors whose books examine clashes, from China to Hong Kong to Russia, and their aftermath, searching for answers to riddles of our politicized times: Ha Jin’s Looking for Tank Man, Gigi L. Leung’s Everyday Movement (tr. Jennifer Feeley), and Svetlana Satchkova’s The Undead: A Novel of Modern Russia. Moderated by Gloria J. Browne-Marshall, author of A Protest History of the United States, this discussion will surface the costs and necessities of dissent. What can novels tell us about the confrontation between freedom and autocracy? What does heroism look like in our daily lives—at home and in the streets—and how are acts of resistance remembered?

Book Discussion | Black Poets Share How Their Poetry Explores Blackness, Past & Present

Nigerian-American poet and writer Hafizah Augustus Geter (The Black Period) leads a discussion with lauded poets about their reckonings with history, blackness, and belonging in different cultural contexts, and the art of poetry. Poetry brings a personal, emotional, and artistic lens to the historical record. It can bridge the past and present, offering startling insights and unexpected connections. D.M. Aderibigbe traverses poetic forms in 82nd Division to create a love song to his native Nigeria while exploring the imprint of British colonialism. In Gestuary (tr. Nancy Naomi Carlson), Sylvie Kandé offers a collection of gestures that fracture the flow of time, from Senegalese riflemen in World War I to contemporary migrants protesting immigration policies. In Heed the Hollow, Malcolm Tariq explores Blackness, sexuality, and the American South, where queer desire and ancestral voices converge to reckon with histories of trauma, memory, and longing.

Performance | FEMM: Feminist Drama by Emerging Playwright

A museum for its patrons and a prison for its relics, FEMM is a place where women who behave outside of the patriarchal status quo are kept for their own safety. When Char is admitted to the “hysterics exhibition,” she meets four women who have been kept there for longer than they can remember—Ginny, an emotionally volatile recluse who touts complacency but is secretly manipulating her way to escape; Zee, an excitable harpy prone to fits of ecstasy; Via, an apathetic lover of morbidity; and Opi, who often gets lost in familiar places and speaks in strange hallucinogenic riddles. As Char enters their realm, she begins to discover a community among the madwomen, but pushes them to begin exposing the injustices of the emporium. Written by Zoe Stanton-Savitz.

Book Discussion | The Challenges of Writing New York CIty, Explored by Published Authors

In this discussion held against the backdrop of New York City on the festival’s outdoor stage, author and critic Hamilton Cain (This Boy’s Faith) will speak with writers about crafting a city as myth, metaphor, and reality. Cities live in our imaginations as sites of possibility. Self-transformation, unexpected encounters, and unforeseen opportunities are all within reach. In the novels of Amanda Lee Koe (Sister Snake), Sam Sussman (Boy From the North Country), and Gary Shteyngart (Vera, or Faith), cities are characters in their own right. In Koe’s retelling of the Chinese folktale “The Legend of the White Snake,” two sisters who are ancient snakes in human form navigate the constrictions and freedoms of Singapore and New York City. Sussman’s protagonist is drawn into his mother’s stories of late nights with Bob Dylan in her third-floor Manhattan walk-up. In Vera, or Faith, as the rest of the United States devolves into an authoritarian state, New York City struggles to remain a sanctuary of liberal values.

Opening Reception | Deep Field: Sculpture, Space, and Perception of Light

Be the first to see a solo exhibition of new sculptural works by Alyson Shotz in plated steel, glass, paper, and wood. Drawing on natural and scientific phenomena, Shotz creates works that shift with light and vantage point, dissolving the boundaries between solidity and perception. The exhibition references the Hubble Deep Field image as a metaphor for slowed observation.  The featured installation uses thousands of iridescent steel discs that continually change color and depth, evoking shifting celestial, molecular, and cosmic forms.

Book Discussion | How Comedic Writing Addresses Difficult Topics, with Bestselling Authors

Moderated by writer and arts administrator Jared Jackson, this discussion will explore the craft of writing comedy that stings and how humor can illuminate betrayal, grief, and the messiness of life. Writing a funny novel might be the hardest trick in fiction, but these writers make it look easy. Katie Yee and Benedict Nguyễn lead a discussion about writing novels that tackle painful and complicated topics—and are hilarious. In Maggie; or A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar, Yee spins gold from heartbreak when a Chinese American woman’s husband leaves her for a white woman named Maggie. In Hot Girls with Balls, Nguyễn serves up a hilarious setup—two trans women, star-crossed lovers, playing on competing sides of a professional men’s indoor volleyball league.

Book Discussion | Multi-Genre Writers Explore Queerness, Masculinity, & Class

Together, writers will discuss the different ways queer lives unfold across continents and cultures. Definitions of queerness and masculinity shift across cultures, often shaped and enforced by class. Palestinian writer Tareq Baconi reflects on his childhood best friend, the boy he loved while growing up in Jordan, in his memoir Fire in Every Direction, set against the backdrop of his family's history of dispossession. Afro-Dominican writer Alejandro Heredia's novel Loca follows a queer Dominican immigrant processing trauma from his past in the Dominican Republic while navigating the financial and emotional precarity of his experience in the US. Moderating the conversation is Thomas Page McBee, whose memoir Amateur chronicles his training for a charity boxing match as he interrogates the cultural scripts of masculinity, aggression, and gender as a trans man.

Opening Reception | Pleasure, Consumption, and Pop Culture: Paintings by Walter Robinson

This exhibition features paintings by Walter Robinson that explore desire, consumer culture, and the psychology of pleasure. Blending the visual language of Pop Art with a critical edge, his work examines how identity and meaning are shaped through commodities and mass media. Balancing irony and empathy, Robinson’s paintings transform everyday indulgences into reflective, often subversive images, capturing the tension between attraction and critique in a culture driven by consumption.

Screening | Ghost in the Machine (2026): Artifical Intelligence Documentary (+ Filmmaker Discussion)

Ghost in the Machine exposes the buried history of artificial intelligence, not as a neutral system of algorithms, but as a technology shaped by racism, misogyny, and entrenched structures of power. Rejecting the notion of AI as inevitable or objective, the documentary traces how myths of progress and efficiency have obscured deeper political and cultural agendas, revealing the ideological foundations beneath the systems now rapidly reshaping modern society. This film is not about machines. It is about power. Ghost in the Machine interrogates who builds AI, who benefits from it, and who bears the cost.  Director: Valerie Veatch The screening will be followed by a discussion of the film, with Veatch in conversation with McKenzie Wark, Ezekiel Dixon Román, and Jessie Daniels.

Play | Limitrophe: Apocalypstic Drama by Emerging Playwright

What can you build on a territory that has been reduced to ruins? On the edge of a border harbor, under a cloche, there aren’t many souls left living. Yet, THE GRAPEVINE narrates NEREO’s arrival to this terrible territory on Suspension Sunday. By chance (or not), he gets hired as a handyman at the Borrodale country house. There, in the middle of debris, are surviving THE BARONESS OF BORRODALE and JACKIE, childhood allies and accomplices. At first blush, the young man’s presence sows discord, friction, and jealousy between the two. At second blush, it also reveals the devastation of their past, and the limits of their future. This group exhibition brings together new and recent works by Bre Andy, Praise Fuller, Gerald Lovell, Devin N. Morris, Nickola Pottinger, Curtis Talwst Santiago, and Taylor Simmons, spanning painting, sculpture, and installation. Framed as a meditation on endurance rather than spectacle, the exhibition presents artistic practice as a sustained, life-giving force rooted in care, community, and persistence.
