Discussion | Learning about Black Contributions to Broadway for Black Theatre Day

Celebrate Black Theatre Day with a discussion between members of the advisory panel of the exhibition, Syncopated Stages: Black Disruptions to the Great White Way. The panel will reflect on the exhibition and the work and legacy of its late curator, Professor Michael D. Dinwiddie. Although the common nickname for Broadway, "the Great White Way," refers, historically, to its dazzling lights, the phrase also suggests the ways in which many histories of New York theater center white artists. Black artists, though, have been important shapers of musical theater in the United States before the electric light was ever used on stage. In the early 20th century, Black composers and writers created many popular musicals in New York that helped define the genre, setting it apart from 19th-century traditions. New forms of syncopation, the disruption of the dominant rhythm, and narratives composed and written by Black artists challenged the prevailing sounds and depictions of Black people on stage.  They pushed back against exclusion and stereotype, laying the groundwork for generations of Black artists whose contributions have reshaped Broadway. Syncopated Stages spotlights their work, acknowledges the challenges they faced, and celebrates the brilliance of what they made—exploring how Black artists transformed the New York stage and how their work still reverberates today.

Book Club | Discuss the Novella Paul Celan & the Trans-Tibetan Angel by Yoko Tawada

Analyze and talk about Paul Celan & the Trans-Tibetan Angel by National Book Award winner Yoko Tawada, translated from German by Susan Bernofsky. Synopsis: Originally published in 2020, Tawada's latest is presciently set in a pandemic-emerging Berlin. Her protagonist initially refers to himself as “the patient,” struggling with leaving his “own four walls.” He reveals a name, Patrik, possibly necessary for interfacing with (select) others. He recently walked out of his job as a research assistant for a professor of German literature, a self-denying narcissist who is particularly and vocally contemptuous of poet Paul Celan’s work. That derision fueled Patrik’s interest in Celan, inspiring him to register for a Celan conference in Paris. The organizers’ query, What is your nationality?, asked in order to potentially secure funding for Patrik’s participation, sends him on a spiraling search for identity as the German-born son of immigrants. His (maybe) chance meeting with Leo-Eric Fu, a “Trans-Tibetan” (a “Celan word,” Patrik acknowledges), provides comforting friendship over language, literature, books, ancestors, and, of course, Celan.

Opening Reception | Photographs Celebrating Unspectacular Events & Small Shifts in Everyday Life, with Artist Talk

Enjoy the exhibition opening of Regula Ruegg's A Light Within: Photos and Stone, a long-term photographic project that focuses on the often overlooked and subtle shifts that define everyday life. A Light Within also highlights the photographic depiction of Ruegg's sculptural work, rendered mostly in alabaster, and examines the surprising interplay and connection of the two mediums. Ruegg is especially interested in unspectacular events, the small shifts in everyday life, the often overlooked background of the grander things. These subtle and seemingly unpresuming themes are combined with still lifes and impressions from her travels. Recently she started her sculptural work with stone again, after a long period of concentrating on photography. The direct contact with stone - mostly alabaster - made a different creative experience and process possible. It also opened up a surprising connection between the two mediums. he opening reception will include an artist talk with the photographer. The exhibition will remain on view through October 29.

The late Arthur Monroe rubbed shoulders with legends of Jazz and the Beat Generation -- names including Nina Simone, Charlie "Bird" Parker and Leroi Jones. Author Reading | Award-Winning Poet Discusses His New Book, Seabeast

Organized as an alphabetical bestiary, Seabeast lyrically catalogues whale species by common name and behaviors, resulting in a poetic compendium that defies pathetic fallacy even as it sings the similarities between homo sapiens and the marine mammoths that have long captured our fascination. In his fifth full-length collection, writer Rajiv Mohabir winds together the threads of cetacean evolution, natural history, animal migration, and human culture and colonization as they concern the endurance of all species. In anthropomorphizing these complex mammals, Mohabir argues, we overwrite and erase their sublime difference and selfhood, their distinct and separate experience of embodiment; yet, in refusing to recognize the familiarities of whale behavior and social patterns, we subjugate these magnificent creatures, affirming a hierarchy that establishes anything inhuman as inherently less than human and enabling cruelty toward all manner of living things.

Author Reading | Bestselling Graphic Novelists DIscuss Their Works

Enjoy a conversation with graphic novel publishers Drawn + Quarterly featuring Tom Gauld, Lee Lai, and Mimi Pond. Physics for Cats by Tom Gauld Tom Gauld returns with Physics for Cats, his second collection of science-based cartoons for the New Scientist. Find out why every scientist worth their sodium chloride has a Tom Gauld cartoon taped to their electron microscope. This new batch of hilarious gags will be as important to every self-respecting scientist as a lab coat and goggles and oversize rubber gloves. Cannon by Lee Lai A LAMBDA Award winner and breakout fiction sensation returns with a darkly funny slice of friendship strife. In Cannon, Lee Lai's much anticipated follow-up to the critically-acclaimed and award-winning Stone Fruit, the full palette of a nervous breakdown is just a slice of what Lai has on offer. As Cannon's shoulders bend under the weight of an aging Gung-gung and an avoidant mother, Lai's sharp sense of humor and sensitive eye produce a story that will hit readers with a smash. Do Admit: The Mitford Sisters and Me by Mimi Pond Born with pedigrees but without the pocketbooks to match, The Mitfords were certainly no strangers to lies, intrigue, or scandal. Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica, and Deborah. The sisters grew from cloistered turn-of-the-century country girls into debutantes who would marry into political influence--for better or worse. Is it any wonder that a young, working class Mimi in Southern California becomes enamored with The Mitfords' downright fanciful rich-and-famous lifestyle? This charming, inventively cartooned, and lovingly researched biography captures the dramatic, over-the-top antics of high society's strongest personalities as they rubbed elbows with some of history's most infamous fascists and communists.
